INTER-TEL STANDARDIZES ON SYBASE

Telecommunications Provider Standardizes on SQL Server 10 To Facilitate
Move From Proprietary to Open Systems and Supply Users with Improved
Decision-Support Capabilities

EMERYVILLE, CA, November 30, 1994, -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that Inter-Tel, Incorporated has
selected Sybase's SQL Server 10 client/server relational database as the
standard to replace its existing proprietary database standard. Inter-Tel,
a $100+ million telecommunications systems and services provider, expects
SQL Server 10 to play a central role in its move to a fully integrated,
open client/server system supporting its 24 offices nationwide.

"The SQL Server 10 open architecture will support the integration of
heterogeneous technologies, applications, and third-party tools, enabling
us to integrate information from various divisions together and thereby
drastically improve our users' ability to access information," stated Tom
Berk, director of management information systems at Inter-Tel. "Further,
the performance and scalability of SQL Server 10 will provide critical
support for Inter-Tel's current operations, changing business
requirements, and future growth."

SQL Server 10 Facilitates Move to Open Systems

SQL Server 10 replaces a proprietary file system database that was
cumbersome in processing pressing decision-support information required by
users. Inter-Tel recognized that to remain competitive it needed to
leverage its customer data more strategically. The SQL Server 10 database
server is expected to provide timely, accurate customer data, such as
demographics and purchasing patterns. Users will be able to view and
analyze this information iteratively, spot trends, and recommend new
products that better reflect customers' needs. The open architecture of
SQL Server 10 facilitates the interoperability of Inter-Tel's
heterogeneous software applications and data access tools, extending
management's choice of systems and users' selection of desktop tools.

Inter-Tel Extends Sybase Implementation Nationwide

Inter-Tel plans to implement SQL Server 10 as a central server that
supports a 16-gigabyte mirrored database running on Hewlett-Packard
hardware. A wide-area network will link desktop systems and HP 9000
workstations running on HP/UX. With the open architecture of SQL Server
10, Inter-Tel was able to take a "best-of-breed" approach for building its
client/server environment. Manufacturing, distribution, and financial
enterprise applications, provided by Avalon Software and Lawson, are being
integrated and will run concurrently at each remote office, accessing
Sybase's SQL Server 10 via SQL protocols. Scopus Technology's customer
support and quality systems handling software applications will also be
utilized. Inter-Tel expects to complete its implementation in 1995.

"We're pleased by Inter-Tel's decision to standardize on SYBASE software,"
stated Richard Yanowitch, vice president of corporate marketing at Sybase.
"Inter-Tel's decision exemplifies a common corporate need to implement
best-of-breed technology in order to maximize competitive advantages. The
openness and flexibility inherent in Sybase's SQL Server 10 provide the
necessary strategic foundation to support the dynamic business
requirements of companies such as Inter-Tel."
