SYBASE ANNOUNCES IQ ACCELERATOR, DELIVERING BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE FOR
DATA WAREHOUSING

Sybase's New Interactive Query Accelerator Features Patent-Pending Bit-Wise
Indexing Technology For Fast, Flexible Data Access

EMERYVILLE, CA, November 29, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced SYBASE IQ Accelerator software for
enhanced, interactive query performance. An optional extension to SQL
Server 10, the IQ Accelerator uses patent-pending Bit-Wise indexing
technology to deliver breakthrough performance for the complex, ad hoc
queries that dominate data warehouse applications. It offers up to a
100-fold query performance improvement over standard relational databases
running on the same hardware.

The IQ Accelerator is the result of a joint development effort between
Sybase and Expressway Technologies, a data warehouse software supplier
acquired by Sybase in October 1994. It is a key component of Warehouse
WORKS, Sybase's comprehensive framework for client/server-based data
warehousing, announced today. (See Sybase's Warehouse WORKS press release,
dated November 29, for more information.)

"Client/server data warehouse applications hold the promise of enabling
companies to provide a new level of information-based intelligence for
strategic decision-making across their organizations. However, with that
promise come complex, technology challenges," said Mark Hoffman, president
and CEO of Sybase. "The combination of IQ Accelerator and SQL Server
software plays a critical role in the data warehouse process by giving
customers fast, interactive access to the information they need tn make
real-time, strategic decisions about their business."

"Indexing technology is the crucial missing piece for large-scale data
warehousing solutions," said Richard Winter, president of Winter
Consulting, a firm specializing in very large database environments. "A
lot of people think that as long as you do things in parallel, you don't
have to do them efficiently. However, as databases grow into terabytes,
smart indexing will be crucial. In offering the IQ Accelerator, Sybase
demonstrates that it understands the significance of advanced indexing
technology for very large databases."

IQ Accelerator

The IQ Accelerator is a transparent, optional extension of SQL Server that
provides enhanced, interactive query performance through high-performance
query indexing. Its patent-pending technology has demonstrated 10- to
100-fold performance improvements over standard relational databases -
with no change to the hardware.

In actual customer environments, IQ Accelerator has shown even greater
performance gains. For example, a large Southeastern utility company
recently compared IQ Accelerator on an AT&T 3500 Series computer to SQL
Server running alone on the same system and DB2 on an IBM 3090 mainframe.
Each testing sequence used complex queries designed by the utility
company, which were run against real data from its databases. In executing
the complex queries, the IQ Accelerator demonstrated performance gains
of:

* Up to 516+ times faster than SQL Server alone.
* Up to 240+ times faster than DB2 running on the mainframe.

The key to the IQ Accelerator's performance is its unique Bit-Wise indexing
technology. Based on the use of bit-maps, Bit-Wise technology allows all
data and data types - including character and numeric fields not supported
by other bit-map indexing schemes - to be represented as bits within
indexes. Using these indexes, a query manipulates only the relevant fields
of data. The IQ Accelerator also employs compression technology that,
combined with Bit-Wise indexing, allows data to be stored in the index at
50% to 75% of its original size. As a result, most queries are resolved
directly through the index, eliminating the need for time-consuming
database table scans in which the system wades through massive amounts of
non-relevant data. This reduces input/output (I/O), providing fast,
predictable query response times and efficient support of large numbers of
users.

The IQ Accelerator provides seamless integration with SQL Server through
Sybase's Open Server application programming interface (API), allowing
customers to leverage Bitwise technology while maintaining traditional
relational database strengths. The IQ Accelerator shares the SQL Server
database's administration facilities, including single log-in, security,
catalog, and administrative interface, as well as a new built-in
intelligent query manager. This query manager automatically invokes the
optimal response by identifying and transparently passing database updates
to SQL Server and decision-support queries to the IQ Accelerator.
Additionally, the IQ Accelerator works with the broad range of
industry-leading client/server tools that already support SQL Server 10,
without requiring any modification of the tools.

IQ Accelerator Availability

The core technology for IQ Accelerator is now in controlled release under
the name "Expressway 111." The IQ Accelerator product is scheduled to
enter beta testing in Spring 1995 with general availability in Summer
1995. Pricing for the IQ Accelerator product will be announced at the time
of general availability. Platforms supported by IQ Accelerator include
AT&T, Data General, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Sun SPARC systems, as well
as Intel-based computers running Windows NT.
