Latin America Software Sales Reach $41 Million for Q3 1994
Doubling of Sales in Brazil Paces Growth

December 19, 1994 (Washington, DC) - The Software Publishers Association
(SPA) announced today that US publishers' sales of personal computer
application software reached $41 million in Latin America in the third
quarter of 1994 (Q3 '94), a 47% increase from the third quarter of 1993
(Q3 '93). For the first three quarters of 1994, sales were $102 million,
an increase of 37% from the same period in 1993. Unit sales increased 178%
for the third quarter, and 156% for the first three quarters.

Sales up Strongly in Brazil and in Mexico

SPA sales reports for Latin America are able to separate three regions:
Brazil, Mexico and all other Latin American countries. Sales in Brazil
were up 104% to $11 million in Q3 '94, while first three quarter sales
were up 96% to $24 million. In Mexico, sales were $13 million (up 56%) for
the quarter and $35 million (up 20%) for the first three quarters,
respectively. For comparison, growth rates in the US/Canada market were
15% for the quarter and 11% for the first three quarters. While the
US/Canada market is much larger, growth was much more robust in the Latin
American markets.

Windows Applications Account for the Majority of Sales

Windows applications accounted for the majority of application software
sales in Latin America through the first three quarters of 1994. Sales of
Windows applications reached $86.7 million in the period, a 78% increase
from 1993. Windows sales accounted for about seven in eight application
software dollars spent in Latin America in Q3 '94.

Windows applications clearly drive US firms' sales in Latin America. For
the first three quarters, DOS applications declined 48% to $10.8 million,
while Macintosh applications were off 19% to $3.4 million.

"The Latin America sales growth in Q3 '94 was about three times the growth
rate seen in the US/Canada market," said David Tremblay, SPA's Research
Director. "Of course, actual growth of software usage was probably much
higher over the period, as many of the countries in this region are
notorious for their software piracy. With the increased protection of
software intellectual property in the NAFTA and GATT agreements, we should
be able to look forward to higher sales
and even higher rates of growth in this region in the future."

Sales data reported are from the SPA's International Data Program, and
represent total revenues in these regions of the forty primarily US-based
software firms participating in the SPA's International Data Program. The
companies submit their confidential sales data to the accounting firm of
Arthur Andersen, which prepares the report for the SPA. Among the
participants are Adobe, Borland, Claris, Lotus, Microsoft, Software
Publishing, Symantec, and the WordPerfect Division of Novell. While US
companies have the dominant market share in most of these regions, the
figures reported should not be taken as an estimate of the total market
size. Rather, they represent total sales of the reporting companies.
