IBM and the University of Alabama Win RealWare Award for Desktop and
Workgroup Computing Solution

SOMERS, N.Y., Dec. 19, 1994 . . . IBM Corporation and its customer, the
University of Alabama, were honored with a RealWare Award at a recent
awards ceremony at DB/EXPO '94 in New York City. The award recognizes IBM
and the University of Alabama as providing the most outstanding solution
in the Desktop Database and Workgroup Computing category.

IBM's DATABASE 2 (DB2) for OS/2 was selected by the University of Alabama
as the database of choice for an application that utilizes relational
database and multimedia technology for improving the process of campus
voting for student elections.

The kiosks that are used in the election process run IBM's OS/2 in
multimedia applications and are connected to a DB2/2 database server for
the purpose of capturing voter information. Prior to the election, the
kiosks are used by potential voters to review candidates who promote their
platform by means of a digitized video segment. On election day, the
kiosks serve as voting devices that communicate with the database server.
This solution has addressed the University's need for accurate, secure
elections with results delivered in a timely fashion.

"We are very pleased to receive this award, which recognizes IBM's
commitment to providing customers with solutions that meet their needs,"
said Janet Perna, director of database technology, IBM Software
Solutions.

"IBM had the solutions for us when we decided to implement a multimedia
kiosk that provided students with campus information," said Dr. Rod Riley,
associate director of the Seebeck Computer Center, and head of the
center's Advanced Technology Group (ATG) at the University of Alabama. "We
are excited to be recognized with IBM as providing advanced and innovative
technology to our students."

Founded in 1831 in Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama is the state's
first university. With an enrollment of 19,300, University of Alabama is a
