Apple Computer Announces New Pippin Multimedia CD-ROM Platform

First Pippin Licensee, Bandai Co., Ltd., To Introduce Multimedia Player For
Families In Late 1995

CUPERTINO, California--December 13, 1994--Apple Computer announced today a
new platform for multimedia players that aims to provide consumers with
high performance and affordable CD-ROM-based systems for education and
entertainment. The platform is called Pippin, and is derived from the Mac
OS--the operating system for Macintosh personal computers---and the
PowerPC microprocessor. Apple plans to openly license the platform to a
variety of vendors from different industries.

"Pippin is yet another example of Apple's commitment to expand the
availability of multimedia technologies to people around the world,"
stated Satjiv Chahil, vice president of Apple Computers New Media Group.
"Now multimedia technology has the potential of reaching the penetration
levels of audio CD players and VCR's."

Apple believes that the Pippin platform will provide customers and software
developers with significant advantages over current CD-ROM- based
multimedia players, many of which are focused simply on playing game
software. Perhaps most important, the Pippin platform is expected to
support a wide array of multimedia titles. Many existing Macintosh
multimedia titles--from child and adult education, information reference,
entertainment, games and music--are expected to run on Pippin-based
systems, as developers will only need to make slight modifications to
current Macintosh multimedia software to make them compatible with
Pippin-based systems. This is expected to give consumers a much broader
range of software titles than that offered by game-based CD-ROM players.
Conveniently, CD-ROM titles developed specifically for Pippin can also be
played, without modification, on a Macintosh computer. And just as
important, it is expected to greatly expand the market for Macintosh
multimedia developers. Macintosh already is the leading platform for
multimedia software development in the world and the market leader in
multimedia software sales in Japan.

Additionally, the company believes that Pippin's RISC-based architecture
will promote the development of new and compelling multimedia software
that takes advantage of the exceptional power of the PowerPC
microprocessor.

As a result, Apple expects that Pippin will be the multimedia platform able
to deliver easy-to-use family entertainment and education at a lower price
than existing personal computer products, and with much greater
expandability and broader access to CD-ROM software programs than current
game players.

"CyberFlix is excited that Apple is bringing an easy-to-use CD-ROM player
to the mass market," said Bill Appleton, President of CyberFlix, Inc. "We
plan to support it with all our titles."

Concurrently, at a press conference today in Tokyo, Apple and Bandai Co.,
Ltd., one of the largest family entertainment companies in the world,
announced that Bandai will be the first to license Pippin, with
introduction of Bandai's multimedia player slated for late 1995.

PowerPC Performance For the Next Generation of Multimedia Players Powered
by the advanced PowerPC 603 microprocessor, Pippin will use a sub-set, or
run-time version, of Apple's popular Macintosh operating system that
allows users to run a given title. The performance of the RISC-based,
64-bit architecture of the PowerPC chip is expected to provide processing
power for a new generation of interactive education and entertainment
CD-ROM software programs.

"Prior to Pippin, moving software from the Mac to any of the set top
systems required a huge development effort," stated Michael Kripalani, CEO
of Presto Studios, Inc. "We are already engaged in many Pippin projects,
including a new version of the Journeyman Project which has been designed
to take advantage of Pippin's PowerPC 603 processor and 4X ROM drive."
