P.H.D. 16 Extended Diagnostics Core-Level Diagnostic Firmware

Clearwater Florida -- November 14, 1994 -- MicroData Corp., the leader of
specialized PC diagnostic hardware and software products for computer
professional, announces the release of Extended Diagnostics for its highly
successful P.H.D. 16 (Professional Hardware Diagnostic 16-bit) card.

P.H.D. 16 is a 16-bit card for component level testing of AT 286, 386, 486
and Pentium systems. This unique test equipment provides the user with a
comprehensive range of circuitry diagnostic for system RAM, ROM, DMA
controllers, Page registers, 8042 keyboard controllers, interrupt
controllers. Timers, CMOS clock, and support chips.

The Extended Diagnostics ROM which plugs into the available socket on the
P.H.D. 16 card will allow the user to test base, extended (to 1 gigabyte),
cache and video memory, hard and floppy drives, keyboards, I/O ports
(serial and parallel), monitors, and more without the need for disk based
software.

Many software diagnostic programs are run from a floppy disk or a hard
drive. These programs are at the memory of the drive hardware and disk
media - if the drive malfunctions or there are media errors, diagnostics
cannot be performed. Also, such programs conduct their tests after the
operating system and any TSR's have been loaded. Often, DOS and TSRs, even
the system BIOS, can conflict with and compromise diagnostic testing
causing unreliable test results and even preventing certain core-level
testing altogether. Extended Diagnostic does not suffer from these
limitations because it is run from an EPROM installed onboard P.H.D. 16.
The convenience and reliability of an EPROM also means that technicians do
not have to be concerned with the caring for floppy disks and, unlike
diskettes which have a limited lifespan, Extended Diagnostic will continue
to perform accurately and reliably year after year.

A key feature is the Cache memory test. ROM based testing may be the best
method of testing cache memory. Since the Extended Diagnostics ROM does
not allow the system to boot completely, the systems' Cache can be tested
without the interference of DOS. Once the Extended Diagnostics ROM has
initialized, the user can run the cache memory test and locate cache
memory failures. The same is true with base and extended memory. The ROM
has a unique method of displaying failing memory chip via its memory
mapping diagram.

This ROM will also provide complete diagnostics for your monitor,
keyboards, I/O cards and more. The monitor test will allow the user to run
multiple screen test to ensure the monitor colors are correct. Other test
will ensure that the monitor is properly aligned. Also a sleuth of tests
will provide video mode testing for VESA compliant video cards. The
keyboard test exercises every key on the keyboard, making sure no keys are
stuck or inactive. The I/O port testing sends data through both serial and
parallel ports. Further more it allows the user to control the speed that
the data is transmitted. This feature allows the user to conduct tests
which simulate real world port usage.

The comprehensive motherboard testing of the P.H.D. 16 card combined with
the outstanding peripheral testing of the Extended Diagnostics ROM, makes
the P.H.D. 16 one of the best values on the market. The complete range of
diagnostic capability of the P.H.D. 16 provides the user with a large
number of testing options, eliminating the need for multiple products
and/or large monetary investment.
