Ethernet-Based Networking Kit Gives Windows PCs Instrument Control
Capability

December 19, 1994 -- Austin, TX - National Instruments has announced that
the company' s GPIB-ENET external interface kit is now available for
Windows PCs. Engineers and scientists can use the GPIB-ENET/Win kit to
connect Windows computers to IEEE 488 (GPIB) instruments via Ethernet
networks in numerous instrumentation applications, including automated
testing and laboratory automation. The GPIB-ENET/Win kit, which includes
the GPIB-ENET box and the company's NI-488.2 software for Windows, can
also be programmed with the company's LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI
application software packages.

About the GPIB-ENET

Engineers and scientists can use the GPIB-ENET to control GPIB instruments
from driver-equipped host Windows PCs, Macintosh computers,
Hewlett-Packard 9000 Series 700 workstations, or Sun SPARCstations
anywhere on Internet, a worldwide scientific, research, and educational
network. Scientists and engineers can also use the GPIB-ENET to share GPIB
peripherals between many networked users. For example, a user can control
a GPIB system interfaced to a network by the GPIB-ENET from computers or
workstations located within the same building or from another location in
another state or country. The compact GPIB-ENET also has an internal power
supply, and includes high-level NI-488.2 software.

About NI-488.2

The GPIB-ENET/Win includes the company's NI-488.2 driver software for
Windows. NI488.2 includes more than 50 GPIB-related routines and functions
- including Talker, Listener, Active Controller, and System Controller-
that simplify programming the GPIB. NI-488.2 includes two sets of
functions. The NI-488.2 routines duplicate the protocols and sequences
found in the IEEE 488.2 standard. The NI-488 functions are a de facto
industry standard. Both the NI-488.2 routines and NI-488 functions have
complete multiplatform compatibility, regardless of hardware interface or
operating system, so users can easily port their applications between
computer systems.

Pricing, Availability, and For More Information

The GPIB-ENET/Win kit will be available in January 1995. Prices are $1,095
for the AUI/twisted-pair version and $1,195 for the AUI/coaxial version.
These prices are for single computer use; an optional multi-user software
license is available for several computers and/or workstations.
Software-only packages are also available for current GPIB-ENET/Mac,
GPIB-ENET/Sun, and GPIB-ENET/HP users.
