Control GPIB Instruments with Macintosh Printer/Modem Ports

December 19, 1994 -- Austin, TX - National Instruments announced today a
new external RS-232-to-GPIB controller for Macintosh computers. The
GPIB-232CT-A/Mac includes the GPIB-232CT-A external box and NI-488.2
driver software for Macintosh computers, and is compatible with the
company's LabVIEW graphical instrumentation software. System developers
can use the GPIB-232CT-A/Mac to connect GPIB instruments to Macintosh
computers through a Macintosh printer or modem port.

The GPIB-232CT-A/Mac is ideal for use in instrument control applications in
which there are no plug-in slots available, such as with the Macintosh
PowerBook. It uses the National Instruments NAT488.2 chip to perform all
IEEE 488 Controller functions, including those specified by the IEEE 488.2
standard. The GPIB-232CT-A/Mac implements both normal and extended Talker
and Listener, serial and parallel polling, service requests, pass and
receive control functions, and remote programming functions.

NI-488.2 is a software package for Macintosh that simplifies programming
National Instruments Macintosh-to-IEEE 488 interfaces that function as
GPIB Controllers with complete communication and bus management
capabilities. The software includes more than 50 GPIB-related routines and
functions, thus eliminating the need for the user to understand or program
the hardware. Operations include Talker, Listener, Active Controller, and
System Controller. NI-488.2 high-level functions and routines simplify
interfacing to GPIB instruments and shorten development time. Low-level
functions and routines offer a means of optimizing system performance or
interfacing to special devices. NI-488.2 applications are portable across
many different computer platforms and operating systems so users never
have to rewrite their programs when the move to new systems. The driver
can be linked to application programs through language interfaces for
Microsoft QuickBASIC, Lightspeed C, and MPW C.

The GPIB-232CT-A/Mac will be available in February 1995 for $595. For more
