New Windows-Based System Simulates Signals to Test Radar

December 19, 1994 -- Santa Monica, CA - Technology Service Corporation
(TSC) has announced its new PC-based system for generating simulated radar
signals for testing radars. The RES2000 includes a standard IBM-compatible
PC, custom-designed digital signal processing (DSP) plug-in modules for
real-time radar calculations, and virtual instruments (VIs) for LabVIEW
application software (National Instruments, Austin, TX) for system
control. TSC's virtual instrument approach to testing radars represents
not only a significant downsizing of the physical test system, but also a
major price and performance breakthrough. Technology Service Corporation
is a member of the National Instruments Alliance Program.

About the RES-2000

The RES-2000 real-time simulator synchronizes to the timing and antenna
position of the radar, then generates signals identical to what the radar
would see if it were operating in its normal mode. The system provides a
cost-effective means of radar performance evaluation and operator training
on new and existing radar systems. With the RES-2000, users can operate a
radar in a laboratory environment without having to radiate energy and use
cooperative targets. Operator-defined scenarios can be repeatedly
executed, which is useful for troubleshooting problems. Typical
simulations include targets (aircraft, missiles), clutter (weather, land,
sea), and jammers, which test the ability of the radar to operate in the
presence of electronic countermeasures.

Through the LabVIEW for Windows operator interface, the user has complete
control of the system. Graphic displays, including a Plan Position
Indicator (PPI) are included to monitor the simulated environment and
radar operation.

System Requirements

The RES-2000 requires a 486 computer with floating-point capability, 8 MB
RAM, 25 MB disk space, and Windows 3.1 or greater; LabVIEW Version 2.5 or
greater; and a color monitor.
