Micro Channel Gets New Life

Citing the need to dispel confusion in the market, IBM has announced that
it is consolidating its Personal Computer offerings. Now called the IBM PC
line, both the ValuePoint and PS/2 lines have been combined into one
brand.

The new brand is designed to simplify the offerings into two series. The
300 series will be the lower-end with the 700 series being marketed to
businesses. Micro Channel architecture is available in the 700 series
machines which run on Intel's premier Pentium microprocessor and include a
PCMCIA slot for ease of portable downloading. Both series feature "Rapid
Resume" which allows the PC to be turned off via software and restarted to
return to the application running when turned off. Another feature
available allows the PC to turn itself on when the phone rings, reveive a
message through an internal answering system or accept a fax, and then
turn itself off when finished.

Richard Thoman, IBM's senior vice president of the IBM PC Co., has been
credited with putting the company in a position to revitalize itself
through the streamlining of its product offerings. Additional products in
the mix are Enterprise class PC servers with 60/90-MHz Pentium processors
and up to eight slots and 22 bays, and new high-end ThinkPad 755 notebooks
which will include a built-in CD-ROM drive, speaker phone and enhanced
display.
