Design Science Introduces MathType 3.1

New version adds native Power Macintosh support and new commands for
Microsoft Word 6.0

Long Beach, CA, December 16, 1994, - Design Science is introducing MathType
3.1 for the Macintosh. The new version will make its debut at the USA
MACWORLD Expo in San Francisco. MathType 3.1 which adds native Power
Macintosh support, new commands for Microsoft Word 6.0 and EGO support, is
expected to be shipping at the time of the show.

"If you own a new Apple Power Mac, MathType 3.1 will give you the ultimate
in speed and compatibility," said Paul R. Topping, President of Design
Science. "We are happy to offer Word 6.0 users some particularly useful
features, in addition to EGO support for EGO-aware applications like
WordPerfect, MacWrite Pro, FullWrite and Nisus Writer. Creating and
editing perfect equations is now faster and easier." MathType is
compatible with Apple's System 7.5.

Since its introduction in 1987, MathType has gained recognition among
scientists, engineers, teachers, students and others as the dominant
application for creating and editing mathematical equations for Macintosh
and Microsoft Windows computers. MathType's easy-to-use graphical
interface and its ability to work with a wide variety of applications are
primary reasons for its success. MathType equations can be inserted into
virtually any Macintosh or Windows word processor, desktop publishing or
graphics application. Editing is accomplished via OLE (Object Linking and
Embedding), EGO (Edit Graphic Object), or by using the clipboard.

MathType 3.1 provides users of previous versions, the following additional
features:

- Power Mac Support
- Microsoft Word 6.0 Commands for working with equations
- EGO Technology (Edit Graphic Object)

Power Macintosh owners can install a native Power Macintosh version or the
"fat" binary version to run on both processor types. MathType 3.1 is now
compatible with System 7.5.

MathType 3.1 features new commands which can be added to Word's menus. The
Update Equations command enables users to change fonts, styles and sizes
of all existing equations in a document or selection. It can also be used
to convert old Word formulas to MathType equations and convert MathType
equations to the TeX typesetting language.

The MathType Preferences command enables the user to maintain consistency
among equations by associating a set of MathType font, style and size
preferences with any Word document.

The Equation Numbering command can be used to insert numbers next to
equations, charts and illustrations, supporting several different
numbering formats. References may be inserted into equations that when
doubleclicked, scroll the document to the referenced equations. After
inserting new equations, a single command renumbers all equations and
updates all references.

EGO is an Apple Event-based interface. When MathType 3,1 is used with an
EGO-aware application such as WordPerfect, MacWrite Pro, FullWrite or
Nisus Writer, equations in a document can be edited by simply
doubleclicking, eliminating the need to use cut-and-paste.

MathType's slimmed down sister, Equation Editor, is firmly established as a
value added feature for OEM's selling word processing, desktop publishing
and graphics programs. Although Equation Editor has fewer features than
MathType, users of Microsoft Word, Corel Ventura 5, and FullWrite, (to
name a few) can easily create and edit typeset quality math equations for
their documents. Design Science offers a specially priced upgrade for
Equation Editor users who want the more powerful, full-featured,
MathType.

MathType 3.1 carries a list price of $199.00. Upgrades to MathType 3.1 are
$29.95 for registered 3.0 users, $49.95 for registered 2.x and 1.x users
and free for 3.0 users who purchased MathType after October 1, 1994.
