IPLab Spectrum Adds 3-D Visualization for Scientific Users

(Vienna, Virginia -- November 14, 1994) Signal Analytics has just begun
shipping one of the most powerful IPLab Spectrum Extension modules yet,
called 3D. 3D contains powerful, easy-to-use commands designed
specifically for displaying and analyzing three-dimensional data
structures, such as those acquired from serial sections of a microscopic
specimen. The package consists of several modules which operate on both
grayscale and 24-bit color image data. The modules in 3D have been
optimized for use in optical fluorescence microscopy. Combining 3D with
IPLab's optional microscope focusing control, makes a powerful automated
three-dimensional image capture and visualization system.

Three-Dimensional Visualization

Users can create a movie-loop of image projections from various points in
space. Playing back the movie-loop gives the impression of a rotating
solid, allowing users to view spatial relationships among different
components of a three-dimensional specimen. A Mosaic View command places
images in a two-dimensional array to simplify publication of
three-dimensional image data. Time sequences of multispectral images, such
as fluorescence in situ hybridization data, can be merged into full-color
image sequences and be displayed in a movie-loop.

Sequence Enhancement

3D offers image sequence enhancement capabilities including a
user-controllable three-dimensional sharpening filter, brightness
equalization, and three-dimensional image background subtraction.

Tracing

A powerful 3-D tracing tool allows users to outline objects in three
dimensions. Outlined information is saved in an overlay which can be
stored separately and used for particle sizing, or can be stamped onto the
image to highlight specific volumes.

PowerMacintosh Compatibility

The 3D Extension is available in native code for the PowerMacintosh,
allowing it to fully exploit the new computers' power by markedly
increasing the speed of computationally intense operations. The 3D
extension with IPLab Spectrum running on a PowerMacintosh allows scientists
to perform operations with three-dimensional data that previously could be
done only on workstations.

The 3D extension to IPLab Spectrum is available now for $1,200. IPLab
Spectrum version 2.5 is required to run 3D and is priced separately,
starting at $1,200. Both IPLab Spectrum and 3D are for the Macintosh and
PowerMacintosh computers.
