HawkNet Introduces NetReport Software For Enterprise-Wide Network Capacity
Planning and Troubleshooting

CARLSBAD, CALIF.--December 5, 1994--HawkNet, Inc., a pioneer and leader in
network performance software solutions, has introduced NetReport, a new
software product designed to assist network managers with capacity
planning and troubleshooting through the use of extensive monitoring,
reporting and analysis capabilities.

Immediately upon installation, NetReport begins monitoring over 110 NetWare
internals for proper settings, more than twice the number of functions
observed by any other product on the market. NetReport provides network
managers with an in-depth view of every file server on the network,
offering instant access to real-time data and historical data which can be
viewed in vivid, Windows-based displays.

"Never before has so much file server and network operating system-level
information been available in one place, or on a single screen, for that
matter," said Michael Price, HawkNet's director of software research and
development. "As networks grow and user needs fluctuate, network managers
can use this valuable information to perform daily troubleshooting,
capacity planning and real-time monitoring tasks."

A Window to the Inner Workings of the Network

To analyze network activity, network managers simply select from 12
NetReport categories including NetWare, LAN, network interface card (NIC),
connections, disk, memory, volumes and NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs).
Each category offers detailed information in seconds, enabling the network
manager to avoid the time-consuming task of searching through multiple
software programs or NetWare's MONITOR.NLM in order to monitor activity or
track down problems.

NetReport allows network administrators to easily locate suspicious trends
that negatively impact the network. Large NLMs, for example, can degrade
NetWare performance due to their abundant memory requirements. It is
therefore important for the network manager to be able to instantly view
and track memory allocation -- a process that is easily performed using
NetReport.

Complete information on each NLM loaded and a memory map of the server is
also offered, allowing the network manager to quickly determine version
numbers, dates, RAM footprints, memory usage and other data on every
server in the enterprise.

Detailed statistics on NetWare internals gives a quick summary of NetWare
revision numbers and licensing levels. In addition, NetReport can poll
individual NICs for throughput data, error codes, network addresses and
other information that can indicate potential problems. As a result, the
network manager can track segment congestion levels quickly and easily,
making adjustments accordingly before load balancing problems occur.

And because the software tracks activity all the way down to the connection
level, data throughput for each user connected to the server is available.
This assists with capacity planning, allowing the manager to determine
where and when new and additional resources are needed.

Tangible Historical Evidence to Analyze, Respond and Plan

NetReport continuously analyzes file server activity and compiles a
valuable user-defined database of historical information. Unlike other
products that can accommodate only hours of historical data, NetReport
permits users to specify a historical time frame of up to 90 days. Such
data is ideal for troubleshooting, providing detailed records for
investigating the critical factors that precipitated a file server
ABEND--and avoiding future problems. The historical database also serves
as a trend analysis tool for reporting and expansion planning. As a
result, the network manager can plan quarter-by-quarter or month-by-month
for the equipment requirements brought on by new users and ever-increasing
amounts of network data.

With NetReport, single-button control and quick, "point and click"
techniques rival leading commercial packages for creating high quality
reports. While other monitoring packages offer limited (or no) options for
customized reports, NetReport includes twelve custom graphing and
reporting alternatives (including 2-D, 3-D, bar and Gantt). By combining
the features of a monitoring package with a superior graphing
functionality and Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) support, NetReport equips
users with the means to create thorough reports faster than any other tool
on the market, according to Price.

NetReport runs on the server as a NetWare Loadable Module and on the client
as a Windows application. Suggested list pricing is $495 for the primary
service license.
