ASPEN SYSTEMS AND DIGITAL EQUIPMENT ANNOUNCE MISSION-CRITICAL ALPHA-BASED
WORKSTATION RUNNING OpenVMS OPERATING SYSTEM

FIRST VENDOR TO LICENSE AND SELL ALPHA OpenVMS IN NON-DIGITAL HARDWARE TO
DEBUT AT FALL '94 DECUS

WHEAT RIDGE, Colorado -- December 12, 1994 -- Aspen Systems, Inc. today
announced a joint licensing agreement with Digital Equipment Corporation
to package the OpenVMS operating system with its high-performance line of
workstations. Aspen's ALPINE workstations - powered by the Alpha AXP
microprocessor - represent the first commitment by a hardware vendor
outside of Digital to load OpenVMS right on their Alpha-based systems.
The new workstations running OpenVMS will be demonstrated at Fall '94
DECUS, which opens today at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim,
Calif.

"The performance of the Alpha microprocessor allows us to create very
powerful systems which will increase the OpenVMS systems presence in
small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SME). The rapidly expanding SME market
demands the business critical functionality of OpenVMS," notes Steven
Spring, CEO of Aspen Systems, Inc. "In addition, we see great growth
potential as more and more applications port to the OpenVMS operating
system - that adds up to a tremendous market opportunity for us."

SYSTEMS FEATURES AND CAPABILITIES

Aspen Systems' ALPINE combines Digital's 21066, 21064 or 21064A processor
and the 21072 PCI core logic chip set with a 128-bit RAM bus designed for
maximum computing performance. By using Aspen's "pop out chip and
oscillator" design, the same ALPINE motherboard supports processor speeds
of 166MHz, 200MHz, 233MHz, and 275MHz. Motherboards may be easily
upgraded with this unique design. The board includes three version-2 PCI
compliant expansion slots for high speed I/O throughput of up to 132
megabytes per second. Three ISA expansion slots provide backward
compatibility with thousands of PC peripherals. All of these features are
now available with the Digital OpenVMS operating system loaded right on
the box.

ALPHA AXP, OPENVMS AND ALPINE DELIVER SOLUTIONS TODAY

The 166MHz and 200MHz Alpha-based ALPINE Systems began shipping in April
1994. The 233MHz and 275MHz ALPINE Systems began shipping in July of
1994. These workstations - available as complete systems and to OEMs as
motherboards - target Windows NT (out of the box), Windows NT Advanced
Server, OSF/1 and OpenVMS markets, with initial focus on engineering,
graphics and automation applications.

According to Jesse Lipcon, OpenVMS systems business vice president, "This
is a significant milestone in the history of OpenVMS. As part of our
commitment to continue open systems practices and willingness to share our
key technologies, we have encouraged and welcome this new relationship,
that ultimately puts OpenVMS and Alpha systems into new customer
environments. Aspen customers will enjoy the benefits of OpenVMS' large
applications portfolio that over ten million users are currently
accessing, not to mention the advantage of being on the world's leading
64-bit technology with Alpha systems. We look forward to much mutual
success with Aspen."

THE ASPEN SYSTEMS COMMITMENT

The founders and staff of Aspen Systems have more than fifteen years of
manufacturing, development and marketing experience in the desktop
computer market. Aspen's people have long been committed to providing
