Apple and IBM Multimedia Venture, Kaleida Labs, Ships First Products

CUPERTINO, California -- December 19, 1994 -- Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced support for both the Kaleida Media Player Version 1.0 and the
ScriptX Language and Class Library Version 1.0 (ScriptX), shipping today
from Kaleida Labs. Kaleida Labs was founded as part of strategic
partnership between Apple Computer and IBM Corporation in June of 1992 as
an independent, privately-held company. Its goal was to create a new
software platform designed for interactive multimedia developers that
would be independent of underlying operating systems and hardware.

"While we've witnessed numerous multimedia alliances springing up recently,
the Apple/IBM alliance that launched Kaleida is notable because it is
delivering the products it was chartered to create," said David Nagel,
Apple senior vice president and general manager of the company's AppleSoft
division. "Kaleida has produced a much-needed, platform-independent
standard that removes technical barriers to multimedia innovation. These
first products from Kaleida are just the beginning. We support ScriptX and
not only do we see the Kaleida Media Player becoming a popular feature on
future Apple systems, we also intend to support the Kaleida software
platform with ScriptX tools."

The Kaleida Media Player (KMP) is the heart of the system that was
envisioned in 1992. It represents a complete multimedia software platform
for both developers and end users. With the KMP, developers can write one
version of an application instead of many versions targeted at specific
operating systems. The second component is the ScriptX Language and Class
Library (ScriptX), a complete object-oriented programming solution that
developers will use to create ScriptX applications for the KMP. The third
component of the Kaleida software platform will consist of forthcoming
application development and authoring tools that will provide access to
ScriptX for non-programmers.

ScriptX and the Kaleida Media Player will allow Apple developers to create
applications on the Apple Macintosh and have them run on any platform,
saving time and money in the multimedia development process. Customers can
then benefit by having access to richer interactive multimedia content.
