Synopsys Launches Its Accord for Microsoft Excel Chemical Spreadsheet on
the Macintosh and Power Macintosh

1st December 1994 -- Synopsys Scientific Systems Ltd. today launched its
innovative chemical spreadsheet, Accord for Microsoft Excel, on the
Macintosh and Power Macintosh platforms. Now Macintosh users can begin to
benefit from the same powerful chemical spreadsheet capabilities as the
thousands of users of the Microsoft Windows version of Accord for Excel.

Accord is unique in providing scientists with a full range of chemical
facilities to manage, analyse and search chemical structures and
associated data within Microsoft's popular spreadsheet environment. With
Accord for Excel users can store chemical structures and other chemical
objects, such as substituents, directly in spreadsheet cells with retained
"chemical awareness". This allows chemically-meaningful functions to be
linked to chemical cells for calculating derived properties, such as
molecular weight, percentage composition or Log P. In essence, Accord
transforms Excel into a fully functional chemical spreadsheet - something
that chemists have long been demanding.

Accord for Excel offers a wealth of chemical data analysis and manipulation
facilities to assist research scientists in correlating and assimilating
property trends and structure-activity relationships. Access to Accord
facilities is via an additional Chemistry menu in Excel and an Accord
toolbar. Context-sensitive help is seamlessly integrated into Excel's
industry standard spreadsheet environment, as are all other Accord
facilities. This means low training & support costs as compared to other
chemical software packages with proprietary user interfaces.

Chemical tables in the spreadsheet can be sorted based on structural
similarity and filtered by chemical substructure. Users can create R-group
tables that contain chemical substituent designations for a given core
structure. Included with the package is a library of over 250 common
substituents and associated physicochemical properties. New substituents
and property fields can be defined by users. Similarly, users can define
their own chemical functions thanks to Accord's open architecture.

Dr. Glen Hopkinson, Managing Director at Synopsys, commented: "The Accord
for Excel chemical spreadsheet complements and extends the native
capabilities of Microsoft Excel and works seamlessly with other chemical
drawing and database packages. On the PC, Accord for Excel has already
become an indispensable aid to discovery scientists focused on turning
research data into useful information. Now Macintosh and Power Macintosh
users can begin to benefit from its unique chemical spreadsheet
capabilities."

Development of the Macintosh version of Accord for Excel has been
facilitated by Synopsys' status as a Microsoft Solution Provider and as an
Associate of the Apple Developer Program. Gary Hunt, Business Development
Manager of Microsoft's Solution Developers Group, commented: "Microsoft's
Solution Provider initiative is all about working closely with our
strategic partners to enable superior customer solutions, that utilise
Microsoft core technology, to be brought to market. Our relationship with
Synopsys is fundamental to providing Microsoft Excel users with the
functionality that is required to manage, analyse and manipulate chemical
data."

Standard chemical editors, such as ChemDraw and ISIS/Draw, can be used to
enter and modify structures or queries. And chemical data, stored in
database systems such as MACCS and ISIS, can easily be imported into an
Accord-enabled Excel spreadsheet with retained chemical awareness.
Similarly, individual structures or whole chemical data tables can be
exported in a variety of standard formats, such as SD, SMD and SMILES.
Using Excel's macro language or Visual Basic for Applications advanced
applications can be developed that seamlessly access data stored in other
chemical packages from within the Accord for Excel environment.

Accord for Excel - Compatibility, Pricing and Availability

Accord for Excel is compatible with both Microsoft Excel 4.0 or higher and
is available for the Microsoft Windows, Macintosh and Power Macintosh
platforms at an introductory price of 495 Pounds ($695 in the USA). A 40%
discount is available to academics.
