Weitek Ships MPEG Support with Video POWER
Better-than-TV-Quality Video Now Available on Ordinary PCs

October 31, 1994--Sunnyvale, Calif.--Weitek Corporation announced today
that it is the first graphics IC vendor to ship, at no additional cost,
MPEG video playback support with its video accelerator chip. MPEG
decompression technology, licensed from Xing Technology Corporation, is
now bundled with Video POWER co-processors shipped to OEMs. MPEG is the
international standard for the compression and decompression of video for
applications in consumer electronics and personal computers.

Video POWER is Weitek's video coprocessor which, when combined with the
Weitek Power 9100 64-bit graphics accelerator, delivers high-performance
graphics and TV quality video playback to advanced multimedia-enabled PCs.
When combined with the performance of today's Pentium Personal Computers,
this chip set delivers full screen, full motion TV-quality MPEG playback.

"The combination of Video POWER and Xing's MPEG software proves the
viability of software-based MPEG playback for today's high-performance
computing platforms," said Saul Altabet, manager of strategic marketing
for Weitek Corporation. "While the rest of the industry is talking about
future video acceleration products, we are shipping this capability
today."

"The performance achieved using Weitek's software-based MPEG solution is
excellent considering the complexity of the MPEG algorithm," commented Jon
Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Associates, a Tiburon, California research
firm focusing on the computer graphics industry. "The mix of existing
hardware with a software codec is a clever and economical way to put an
affordable MPEG solution in the user's hands."

Video POWER is a dedicated coprocessor to the Weitek Power 9100
high-performance graphics accelerator. The Video POWER coprocessor
contains hardware specifically designed to improve the decompression and
playback of digital video sources in a PC, including video coming from
disk, CD-ROM, networks, or over a telecom link. The Power 9100 and Video
POWER combination delivers full 30 frames per second video playback at
resolutions as high as 1280 x 1024 at 16M colors. Multiple data streams
are supported, a requirement for future teleconferencing applications.

Video applications are supported seamlessly as the graphics and video
acceleration features of the Power 9100 and Video POWER are accessed at
the GUI device driver level, not the application level. Weitek provides
software drivers for all major graphical user interfaces. In addition to
MPEG, Weitek's Power 9100 and Video POWER support all the popular codec
formats including Indeo, Cinepak, Motion-JPEG, and MS-Video1. All drivers
are fully DCI-compliant allowing applications to transparently take
advantage of the acceleration features of the chip set.

Video POWER is packaged in a 160-pin PQFP and sells for $25 in volume.
Production units are available today. The MPEG decompression software is
available free of charge to OEMs purchasing the Video POWER chip.
