IBM ANNOUNCES THE VOICETYPE SPEECH RECOGNITION FAMILY

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 8, 1994 ... IBM Corporation, the company that
pioneered speech recognition, today announced the VoiceType family of
speech recognition products and introduced VoiceType Dictation, a high
accuracy, large vocabulary speech recognition solution that helps doctors,
lawyers and other professionals improve their productivity and
effectiveness.

Previously known as the award-winning IBM Personal Dictation System,
VoiceType Dictation is capable of recognizing 32,000 words at a rate of
approximately 70-100 words per minute, with 97% accuracy.

Radiologists, surgeons, lawyers, journalists and other professionals in the
U.S., Canada, and Europe currently use the OS/2 version of this system to
reduce document turnaround time and save money. VoiceType Dictation is now
available for Windows, and is also supported for laptop and notebook
computer users via a PCMCIA digital signal adapter card.

"As more individuals, institutions and corporations evaluate and embrace
speech recognition solutions, it is clear that high accuracy remains their
number one requirement," said Howard Fields, Director of Marketing, IBM
Speech and Pen Products. "VoiceType is targeted directly at this customer
need."

A Personal Productivity Investment

Professionals whose work includes extensive writing have been able to
reduce the amount of typing required to do their jobs, and can achieve
immediate document turnaround without waiting for someone to transcribe
notes for them. Physically- challenged users who cannot use a keyboard now
have greater access to computers through IBM's VoiceType Dictation.

A sophisticated statistical language model developed by IBM and the
computer's understanding of the individual's voice allows VoiceType
Dictation to accurately convert the user's spoken words to text. IBM's
specialized language models for Radiology, Emergency Medicine and
Journalism add further accuracy for VoiceType Dictation users.

VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 is available in English, U.K. English, French,
German, Italian and Spanish. VoiceType Dictation for Windows will be
available in non-English versions in 1995. VoiceType Dictation has a
manufacturer's suggested list price starting at $999 and is available
immediately from selected IBM authorized resellers and distributors.

Work the Way You Think

Unlike competitors' speech products, which require the user to interrupt
work and make corrections immediately, IBM's VoiceType Dictation allows
editing after one has finished their train of thought or their entire
document. The system can even replay what the user said, eliminating the
need to remember what was said when making corrections. With IBM's new
PCMCIA card, customers can take VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 or Windows
with them while traveling or working in a mobile environment.

VoiceType Dictation for Windows is the latest in IBM's family of highly
accurate and easy to use speech recognition products. Other offerings
include IBM's Continuous Speech Series (ICSS), a speaker-independent
continuous speech toolkit which allows developers to create speech-enabled
applications in OS/2, Windows and AIX environments. IBM VoiceType Control
II, which provides speech navigation, is pre-loaded on selected models of
the ThinkPad 360 and 700 Series commercial desktop PCs announced in
October 1994.

VoiceType Dictation for Windows and OS/2 both sell for less than $1,000 and
run on IBM PC and PC-compatible desktop and mobile systems, with at least
a 33MHz 486DX or 25MHz 486SX microprocessor, respectively. The software
for both requires 8 million bytes (MB) RAM and 32 MB of free disk space
after the initial required training is completed. VoiceType Dictation for
OS/2 runs under OS/2.1 and OS/2 Warp. VoiceType Dictation for Windows runs
under Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups and DOS 5.2 or higher. DOS 6.1
is required when using VoiceType Dictation with the PCMCIA digital signal
processor card.

IBM VoiceType Dictation for Windows and OS/2 are compatible with many
existing applications, such as Lotus Notes, (1-2-3), AmiPro, cc:Mail,
Microsoft Excel, Word, and Quicken. In addition, most existing Windows or
OS/2 applications can use VoiceType Dictation with relative ease. The user
simply moves dictated text to their program or issues simple commands such
as "file", "save" or "print" directly to them.

VoiceType Dictation for Windows and OS/2 come with a 30-day money back
guarantee, and IBM's limited warranty. A copy of IBM's limited warranty is
included with VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 and Windows. Anyone interested
