Tribe Announces TribeSwitch ENT, A Packet Switching Ethernet Hub

ALAMEDA, Calif -- October 1, 1994 -- Tribe Computer Works, the company that
pioneered packet switching in the Macintosh market in 1991, today
announced TribeSwitch EN, a 5-port Ethernet packet switch. TribeSwitch EN
will dramatically increase network performance by isolating network
traffic across five switched ports. Ideal for networks with both server
and peer-to-peer traffic, TribeSwitch EN offers a "plug-and-play"
solution. No management is required.

Since the introductions of LocalSwitch and TribeStar, Tribe's first packet
switching hubs, switching has become a very popular way to improve
performance, but careful network design is crucial to its effectiveness.
"Tribe has spent the last three years providing switching solutions to
thousands of customers," says Gordon Ritter, Tribe's Co-founder. "We
understand the unique needs of Macintosh workgroups and have the
experience to guide network administrators into the new world of switched
networking."

TribeSwitch EN has five 10BaseT ports, including one interchangeable
10BaseT/AUI port for backbone access. Using fast-packet switching
technology, TribeSwitch EN can achieve 50 Mbps bandwidth and 20 Mbps
throughput capacity, with much lower packet latency than
"store-and-forward" bridges. Automatic self-learning of network
configuration makes the optional SNMP MIB II network management
unnecessary for many users. TribeSwitch EN was especially designed for
increased server performance and heavy peer-to-peer workgroup traffic. Its
rack-mountable design allows easy network integration and installation.

TribeSwitch EN will be available November 1, 1994 and will have a suggested
retail price of $1,995, a price point well with in reach of even small
organizations. TribeSwitch EN with SNMP network management will have a
suggested retail price of $2,495.
