FoxNet Latin America Channel Using Sundance Digital's FASTBREAK System

(Irving, TX - November 1, 1994) Sundance Digital, Inc. recently installed
its FastBreak Digital Spot Playback System for use by the Fox-owned FoxNet
Latin America Channel. The system creates break tapes for commercial
insertion at Fox's uplinks in Mexico City and Homestead, Florida. The
FoxNet Latin America Channel broadcasts to over a million and a half
viewers in Mexico and South America.

Sundance's FastBreak was selected based on the extremely high quality of
the video throughput, and its aggressively competitive price. The
high-speed JPEG compression algorithm used by the system generates
visually lossless video, with CCIR 601 resolution of 720 x 486.

Prior to the FastBreak installation, all the break tapes for FoxNet were
manually edited together - an extremely time consuming and inefficient
process eliminated by the FastBreak system, which is a random access,
non-linear playback platform. The system now imports a playlist and plays
out in real-time to a synchronized Betacam record deck. The tapes are then
sent to the uplink sites, and played on machines controlled by an Alamar
automation system, using a playlist that incorporates FastBreak time code
location information into the Alamar standard file format.

"This is a practical, cost-effective solution for Fox. It maximizes the
most attractive features of digital technology; the virtual elimination of
time-consuming, cost-intensive labor ... and significant reductions in
part replacement and maintenance," says Rush Beesley, President of
Sundance Digital.

The FastBreak system is modular and extensible, offering a solution for any
size station that's ready to make the switch to digital. The system is
built upon integrated library management software that updates and
maintains a lookup database between tape-based inventory and disk
inventory, automating adds and kills, and auto-assembling elements as
required from ASCII format traffic imports. By maintaining an extensive
Master Tape spot inventory, and automating the "bicycling" to and from
disk as often as necessary, the system can utilize significantly less disk
storage than other comparable systems.

At a price of $32,000 for a turnkey system, FastBreak is in a
price/performance league of its own.
