SONY ANNOUNCES FAST DYE SUBLIMATION COLOR PRINTERS

Broad Product Lineup Also Delivers Versatile, High Quality Photo-Realistic
Output

LAS VEGAS; Comdex Booth #L-930; November 14, 1994 -- Broadening its market
offerings in electronic imaging output, Sony Electronics announced today
two dye sublimation color printers that are among the industry's fastest,
offering high quality, photo-realistic prints at speeds from 30 to less
than 90 seconds per page.

The new A4 (8.25 x 11.75 in.) large format digital color printer -- the
Sony UP-D8800 -features user-selectable output resolution (150 or 300
dots-per-inch) and speeds of either 63 or under 90 seconds per print. It
is both PostScript and SCSI (small computer system interface) compatible
and is ideal for applications in the corporate presentation, graphic arts,
prepress and photo proofing and computer graphics markets.

The second new model in the Sony line -- the UP-5500 -- is an A5 (5.88 x
8.25 in.) size color printer with either analog or digital capability that
produces a rated print speed of 30 seconds (38 seconds digital) -- among
the fastest in its class. It also offers resolution of 300 dpi and is
well-suited for many imaging applications that require fast,
photographic-quality output, including amusement photography, multimedia
output and scientific imaging.

"Our customers ask for two critical things above all else -- outstanding
color print quality and speed," said Steven Blum, director of electronic
imaging for Sony Electronics' Business and Professional Products Group.
"With the addition of these new printers that deliver the industry's
fastest print speed for photo-realistic prints, we are confident that Sony
will strengthen its position as a leader in dye sublimation color
printing."

These new printers complement the Sony UP-D1500CN digital dye sublimation
color printer, the third in the company's new line. Sony announced in
September that this printer is now shipping. This is an A6 (4.125 x 5.88
in.) format printer that offers a Centronics parallel digital interface,
high quality resolution (a maximum of 512 x 664 pixels for over 16 million
colors) and a 100-print unattended mode.

Sony UP-D8800

While two minutes or more per page has been a standard of some comparable
products, the UP-D8800 clocks in at under 90 seconds at full resolution.
It is both PostScript and SCSI compatible, and offers user-selectable
output resolution (between 300 and 150 dpi).

The Sony UP-D8800 is an A4 format digital color printer capable of
outputting 8 x 10 in. images on letter-sized paper, especially useful for
photo-related applications that require high quality photo-realistic
prints. For desktop publishing and prepress proofing, the UP-D8800
features full-bleed letter and A4-size printing. For full-bleed
letter-size output, Sony offers oversized media providing an image area of
8 x 10 in. It includes an optional interface board (via the TopMax board)
for PostScript Level 2 compatibility providing 35 fonts and a network
interface that supports the most popular protocols. Font downloading is
enabled by a 40MB hard disk drive.

The UP-D8800 handles a wide range of media sizes, provides an expanded
array of print pixels, offers fast rated print speed and features bundled
driver software and PostScript and SCSI compatibility. System interfaces
that will be developed include Windows (Adobe Photoshop) Plug-in and a 3.1
selector driver), Macintosh (Adobe Photoshop Plug-in and a chooser
driver), Sun (NeWS print) and SGI (an IRIX driver) systems.

Sony UP-5500

The Sony UP-5500 is a versatile OS-independent color printer that operates
on multiple platforms ranging from PC to Macintosh to UNIX, producing a
maximum rated print speed of 30 seconds (38 seconds digital), the fastest
in its class.

Saving valuable time, the Sony UP-5500 features four-frame memory built in
(optionally expandable to eight), allowing users to store multiple images
in the machine simultaneously while executing other print jobs. It
features a digital interface and multiple print modes, and is NTSC and PAL
compatible.

Its versatility is quite evident in its capability to perform applications
ranging from video hardcopy output; amusement photography applications;
multimedia output; and scientific output where imaging requires
photo-realistic output capability.

The UP-5500 prints on either transparencies or paper and features an easy
to use LCD control panel that is menu driven for convenient and
easy-to-use operation. The panel provides feedback on the number of prints
remaining on the ribbon pack. It can also be operated via wireless remote
control. System interfaces that will be developed include Adobe Photoshop
Plugin software for Windows and Macintosh systems.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony UP-D8800 and the UP-5500 will be available in January 1995 at
suggested list prices starting at $7,495. The Sony UP-D1500CN is available
now for a suggested list of $1,950.
