SONIC ANNOUNCES LANSCAPE SNMP, A MACINTOSH BASED SNMP CONSOLE.

Sunnyvale, CA, September 5, 1994 -- Sonic Systems today announced LANScape
SNMP, a Macintosh based Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) console
which allows network administrators to manage SNMP compliant devices from
a Macintosh over AppleTalk or TCP/IP. LANScape SNMP is the first Macintosh
based SNMP console which manages MIB II, AppleTalk MIB, and Repeater
(IEEE) 802.3K MIB devices. Sonic Systems has also defined a proprietary
MIB, which is also managed by LANScape SNMP. A MIB defines the structure
of the database used to store information about a network object.

LANScape SNMP's graphic interface enables administrators to monitor and
configure nodes on a network from a central Macintosh, either in-band via
Ethernet or out-of-band via modem or serial. When launched, LANScape SNMP
automatically searches the network for SNMP nodes. It then assigns an icon
to each node it finds and displays the nodes in a Topology window.

From the Topology window, administrators can cruise the AppleTalk MIB, MIB
II, 802.3K Repeater MIB, or Sonic's proprietary MIB to get node status
information, view and set node configuration variables and view and graph
network data for each node.

When a LANScape SNMP agent notices a significant event about a node, such
as systems going down and being brought back up, link failures, and
traffic overload conditions, the agent sends a trap message to the
management station and these messages can be immediately forwarded to the
administrator via an alert dialog on the console screen, or by
alphanumeric pager or E-mail. Not only does the trap capability enable the
management stations to know about network events very quickly, it also
relieves the management stations of the need to frequently poll large
numbers of nodes on the network. By reducing the frequency of polling,
network traffic is reduced and even networks with hundreds of nodes can be
managed efficiently.

Some hardware vendors have defined proprietary MIB extensions for their
network nodes and future versions of LANScape SNMP will support MIB
compiling and Screen Generation to manage the features specific to those
devices. Screen Generation will allow the user to create MIB screens that
closely mimic the look and layout of the managed device, complete with
flashing LEDs and port drawings. This eases management and troubleshooting
by letting the administrator see exactly what is happening on the device,
without having to physically be with the device. For example, if a station
on a hub is generating too many collisions and needs to be turned off, the
administrator can do so by clicking on the troublesome port.

LANScape SNMP, with a suggested retail price of $799, is scheduled to ship
September 30, 1994 and comes with unlimited technical support.
