SFIT - A powerful, easy to use, presentation manager, non-linear curve
fitting program.

I am pleased to announce that a demo version of my shareware program sfit
has been uploaded to ftp-os2.nmsu.edu. It can be found in /incoming for
now but should be put in to /os2/32bit/graphics eventually.

This is the second program in the steiner suite of scientific programs and
joins the XY plotting program splot122. A spectrum display program sspec
will also soon be available.

Sfit uses a non-linear simplex algorithm to minimize an objective function
by varying a number of parameters selected by the user. Several standard
functions such as line, polynomial, gaussian etc. are provided as included
DLLs. It is also possible to build your own DLL provided that you have
available a suitable C/C++ compiler. DLL make files are included for both
the IBM and Borland compilers as well as the source code for the existing
DLLs which can be used as templates for building your own DLLs. User
created DLLs can be arbitrarily complicated and beta testers have used
functions involving numerical integrals, matrix diagonalization,
convolutions etc. For people that do not have a compiler sfit also
provides a vector C interpreter. The fitting function can be specfied as a
small C subroutine which is then interpreted all within sfit. Interperting
is of course considerably slower than running compiled code but the vector
nature of this interpreter makes it viable for comparatively simple
functions. An example interpreted cubic function is provided.

I have received lots of very favourable comments about this program. Every
body that has tried is says that it is the best fitting program that they
have ever used. In one instance it was declared that their work could not
have been done without it. But don't take my word for it give it a try.
The demo version is fully functional except that it will not generate an
output file or save the latest parameters to the sfit.ini.
