November 19th, 1994 -- Remote Software Update (RSU) 1.4, released in
October 1994, is a utility that allows software to be distributed over a
local network. The main purpose of RSU is to install or update software on
user workstations (which here means PC's) to the same level as on a
specific server while still allowing for individual configurations. RSU's
functionality includes comprehensive Microsoft Windows INI file handling
and the unique ability to synchronize entire directory trees.
Configuration file handling is not limited to INI files but can also be
applied to standard text files. Along with hardware detection RSU can
completely automate the process of updating software on a local network.
RSU contains a specialized BASIC-like language interpreter, enhanced with
very powerful system control commands such as SynchronizeDir, and features
If-Else-Endif and Goto constructs. Environment variables can be used and
external programs (utilities or DOS commands) can be executed. The /DEBUG
switch is helpful in finding bugs in your RSU program file.

RSU is now available on the Internet. It can be obtained from any FTP
server that mirrors the SimTel Software Repository. On these servers RSU
1.4 resides in the "/SimTel/msdos/network" directory as "rsu14.zip". After
download it has to be uncompressed using whatever UNZIP program available,
provided it supports ZIP2.0 compression (e.g. UNZIP 5.12, PKUNZIP 2.0x).
The SimTel Software Repository is currently mirrored by more than 30
servers all around the world, the most famous of which being
OAK.OAKLAND.EDU. Information on how to find the other SimTel mirrors as
well as the latest version of PKUNZIP can be found on that FTP server.
(For information on using anonymous FTP please consult your system
administrator.)

RSU 1.4 can also be downloaded from the Washington University Archives
(WUA). These do reside on the anonymous FTP server "WUARCHIVE.WUSTL.EDU".
Here, too, RSU 1.4 is named "rsu14.zip" and can be found in the "network"
subdirectory of the MS-DOS software section.
