SYBASE REPORTS RAPID ACCEPTANCE OF REPLICATION SERVER

More Than 550 Customers Have Chosen Replication Server, Spurred by Early
User Successes with Sybase's Industry-Leading Data Replication Technology

EMERYVILLE, CA, November 22, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that more than 550 customers have
purchased Sybase's Replication Server software since the product began
general availability one year ago. The strong demand for Replication
Server, the industry's first data replication technology product, has been
spurred by the successes of early customers. License sales for Replication
Server in the third quarter of 1994 were nearly double those for the
previous quarter.

Sybase's Replication Server software addresses a growing need among
companies to maintain multiple copies of data at different sites while
ensuring the integrity and consistency of this information at every
location. It ensures the effective implementation of data replication by
offering capabilities to address a broad range of customer application
needs, from a simple, single-resolution update model to the more complex
peer-to-peer model.

"In developing Replication Server, we looked at our customers' need for
reliable access to consistent, replicated sets of data distributed
throughout the enterprise," said Katrina Garnett, vice president of
Sybase's Server and Connectivity Business Unit. "The rapidly growing base
of customers with applications using Replication Server reflect the lead
Sybase has taken in delivering to the market a solution for the real-life
client/server requirements that companies face today."

Sybase has been seeing tremendous growth in the demand for Replication
Server while its chief rival in the database market, Oracle Corp., has not
yet made its Oracle 7.1.x product release with symmetric replication
capability generally available to customers.

Sybase Replication Software Fosters Customer Successes

The customers successfully running production applications with Replication
Server span a broad range of businesses, including such areas as banking
and finance, utilities, beverages, networking, and telecommunications. Two
of these customers are Swiss Bank Corporation and Rochester Gas and
Electric.

"We're using Sybase's Replication Server to increase the performance and
reliability of our trading decision-support system," said Roger Jungst,
associate director, information technology, at the Chicago offices of
Swiss Bank Corporation. "First, we've taken three functions previously
running on one server and distributed them to three separate servers. This
gives us warm back-up systems and speeds response times. Soon we'll
distribute and duplicate data worldwide, which will further speed
performance by avoiding WAN traffic. Replication Server makes these
distribution strategies possible."

Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) in Rochester, NY is using Replication
Server to ensure that its central and district offices share identical
information regarding service outages and the status of repairs. "As a
Northeastern utility company, it's critical that we remedy service
disruptions as quickly as possible," said Astraf Ali, senior analyst at
RG&E. This is especially true with the harsh, life-threatening storms we
experience in Rochester. Using Replication Server software, we hope to
minimize the amount of time our customers are without gas or
electricity."

Replication Server Functionality

Replication Server software is designed to manage data distributed across
multiple sites. Each piece of data typically has a primary owner, which is
the original source of the data. Remote sites then subscribe to the data
they need, and the Replication Server delivers it to them. A component of
Replication Server, the Log Transfer Manager, monitors the database log
for committed transactions that are of interest to the subscribing sites.
The Log Transfer Manager then passes that information to the Replication
Server, which distributes it to the subscribing sites. Additionally, the
Replication Server Manager - a powerful, graphical user interface-based
tool - provides configuration, performance monitoring and troubleshooting
capabilities for the administration of the system.

With Replication Server solidly established on its SQL Server 10 databases,
Sybase plans to expand upon its replication technology, so that other
vendors' databases will be able to replicate information to other sites.
Products supporting other databases are expected to begin shipping in
1995.

Product Availability and Pricing

Replication Server software is now shipping on more than 20 UNIX-based
hardware platforms and Windows NT. Additionally, Replication Server is
scheduled to be available for NetWare and SCO UNIX by the end of 1994 and
OS/2 in Q1 1995. Replication Server pricing ranges from $2,800 to $69,500
and is based on the number of server connections.
