PROXIM AND LXE FORM WIRELESS ALLIANCE

Alliance Will Provide Basis for Joint Products and Accelerate Frequency
Hopping Wireless LAN Interoperability

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, October 31, 1994 -- Proxim, Inc., the leader in wireless
local area networking, announced today that it has entered into a
strategic alliance with LXE, Inc., a premier provider of ruggedized
handheld terminals and RF data collection solutions. The two companies
will work together on a variety of joint product efforts as well as
initiating a broader alliance to achieve interoperability among 2.4 GHz
frequency hopping LAN systems.

With this agreement, LXE and Proxim have committed to provide interoperable
2.4 GHz frequency hopping spread spectrum products. Both companies are
established industry leaders in frequency hopping technology as well as
active participants in the IEEE 802.11 standards committee. LXE delivered
the first 902 MHz frequency hopping RF data collection system in 1991
while Proxim shipped its RangeLAN2 wireless LAN product family, the
industry's first 2.4 GHz frequency hopping solution, earlier this year.

Concurrent with both companies' efforts within the IEEE 802.11 standards
process to advance the longer term objective of industry-wide
interoperability, LXE and Proxim will combine forces to seek broader
industry participation in furthering near term multi-vendor
interoperability among 2.4 GHz frequency hopping wireless LAN products.
Interoperable products from these vendors, to be identified as Mobile
Ready, will allow off-the-shelf laptop, touchscreen or pen-based computers
to co-exist on the same wireless network with industrial RF data
collection devices from a variety of manufacturers.

In addition, the companies have begun to investigate a variety of joint
product programs and have agreed initially on a project to incorporate
Proxim's state-of-the-art 2.4 GHz frequency hopping RangeLAN2 technology
into a new family of handheld PC-based mobile computer platforms from LXE.
Both companies are also exploring avenues for joint technology development
in areas such as ruggedized Token Ring network access points and advanced
antenna designs for future high performance base stations and wireless
repeaters.

"LXE is an acknowledged leader in mobility-based RF data systems and
pioneered in the development and deployment of frequency hopping
technology," said David King, Proxim's president and CEO. "Proxim is
pleased to begin working with LXE both as a supplier of 2.4 GHz wireless
LAN products as well as a partner in future joint technology development.
Our combined efforts to advance the cause of interoperability among 2.4
GHz frequency hopping systems will help to address a critical, unmet
industry need."

LXE wireless networks can support either frequency hopping spread spectrum
or frequency synthesized narrowband radios. The full line of LXE products
includes rugged hand-held terminals, vehicle-mounted terminals, wireless
modems, portable printers, and bar code scanners. With over 22 years of
wireless experience, and being among the first companies worldwide to
implement frequency hopping technology, LXE systems provide mobile,
real-time data communications for warehouse, manufacturing floor, and
distribution center materials control. LXE RF systems easily integrate
into existing Ethernet or Token-Ring computer networks, with TCP/IP,
TELNET, and SNMP/MIB-II protocols, plus 3270, 5250 and ANSI emulations.

"Proxim is the industry's leading OEM supplier of spread spectrum products
and has developed a 2.4 GHz frequency hopping implementation clearly
superior to others we evaluated," said Dr. Thomas Sharon, LXE's president
and CEO. "This relationship is strategic in nature, worldwide in scope and
significant to the industry because of its commitment to multi-vendor
interoperability by two of the recognized leaders in frequency hopping
technology."

Proxim's RangeLAN2 family is designed for high-performance wireless LAN
applications. Based on secure, interference-immune frequency hopping
spread spectrum technology in the 2.4 GHz band, RangeLAN2 offers the
longest range, highest throughput, and most advanced wireless network
architecture of any product in its class. RangeLAN2 delivers an
uncompressed data rate of 1.6 megabits per second (Mbps) per channel
across 15 channels, creating an aggregate network bandwidth of 24 Mbps,
with state-of-the-art features such as high-speed seamless roaming, power
management and site survey tools.
