SOFTQUAD AND SYNEX ANNOUNCE SOFTQUAD PANORAMA--POWERFUL COMPANION PRODUCT
FOR MOSAIC

Chicago -- In a development that could dramatically alter the use of the
Internet, SoftQuad Inc. and Synex Information AB today announced SoftQuad
Panorama, an SGML viewer for the World Wide Web, designed to complement
the NCSA's immensely popular Mosaic product.

SoftQuad Panorama delivers the richer, more robust powers of SGML (Standard
Generalized Markup Language) a format already used by publishers.
Currently documents on the Web must conform to a more limiting, related
format called HTML (HyperText Markup Language). SGML provides support for
longer and more complex documents than currently on the Web, enhanced
linking capabilities, use of specialized characters and symbols, finer
control of document display, as well as search and retrieval tools.

"SoftQuad Panorama will remove the pressure on publishers to maintain
separate sets of source documents for their print, Braille, large type and
CD-ROM versions and separate HTML files for distribution over the World
Wide Web" points out Yuri Rubinsky, president of SoftQuad. "Now they can
produce all of these formats from a single SGML source."

Through the cooperation of the US National Center for Supercomputing
Applications and Spyglass Inc., SoftQuad Panorama has been designed to
seamlessly integrate with Mosaic. Mosaic will continue to provide browsing
of documents created according to HTML, but will automatically launch the
SoftQuad Panorama viewer when it encounters any other type of SGML file.

As an SGML viewer, Panorama can make use of HyTime, the ISO standard for
hypertext and multimedia encoding. Beyond the Web's current linking
ability, Panorama can create links to multiple points in a document, not
just to one, as well as links to locations and phrases in documents to
which the user has no write permission.

Panorama also offers rich presentation capabilities including multiple
user-selectable stylesheets for any group of documents; styles based on
each element (such as a title, or a paragraph, or a list item) and its
context; invisibility of specific information structures in specific
views; display of simple and complex tables; and basic support for display
of mathematics.

Availability

SoftQuad will release free and commercial versions of SoftQuad Panorama in
November. The SoftQuad Panorama SGML viewing software will be available
first for the MS-Windows and UNIX operating environments. A Macintosh
version will follow in mid-1995.

The NCSA has agreed to distribute a freely-available version of the new
viewer as part of its Mosaic distribution, downloadable over the
Internet.

The commercial version, SoftQuad Panorama PRO, will be available through
SoftQuad and Spyglass. The supported, more featured commercial version
product will be available from SoftQuad or, to the licensees of Enhanced
NCSA Mosaic, from Spyglass.

Pricing

The commercial version lists for $139 with aggressive volume discounts. The
commercial version offers considerable additional support for user-control
over display and navigation and the ability to create and save sets of
links, annotations and customized bookmarks while in the viewer.
