OS/2 Professional is announcing a $1000 reward for information leading to
the indictment and conviction of the person or persons responsible for
making OS/2 Warp, DeScribe, Windows 4.0 (beta), and other software
available on the Internet last week. Our reward is in addition to those
announced by DeScribe ($20,000) and Microsoft ($10,000). We also call on
IBM to up the ante, and announce its own reward, something it has yet to
do.

"This act hits OS/2 on its home turf, and we are concerned," says Edwin
Black, editor-in-chief and publisher of OS/2 Professional. "Whether the
vendor is a giant corporation like IBM, or a struggling company like
DeScribe, this kind of infringement activity hurts the growth of OS/2
software."

The unauthorized dissemination occurred at the height of a debate about
DeScribe's new anti-piracy policies. It seems to OS/2 Professional that
this act was backlash against DeScribe for suggesting they would build in
copy protection.

Black adds, "It is time for major corporations and universities to start
policing whether or not their facilities are being used for criminal
purposes, especially since they know such acts are likely to happen. It's
too easy to just blame the anonymous Internet. Someone should ask whether
the operators of the computer systems or bulletin boards must share in the
liability."

OS/2 Professional is also contributing its investigative resources to
identify the culprits. Information may be faxed anonymously to the
magazine at 301 770-1720, or a voice message may be left after hours on
the magazine's answering machine at 301 770-3333. The confidentiality of
all sources will be respected.
