Earthquakes and the Built Environment Index

QUAKELINE * Earthquake Engineering Abstracts * Newcastle Earthquake
Database

Baltimore--National Information Services Corporation (NISC) is pleased to
publish three of the world's leading bibliographic databases on
earthquakes, earthquake engineering, and related topics on one CDROM.
Earthquakes and the Built Environment provides 90,000 records drawn from
these important files and from the collections of the research libraries
that produce them. Search all three files concurrently (by default),
individually, or in any combination.

QUAKELINE (1987-present) provides more than 25,000 citations and abstracts
covering the literature of earthquake engineering and natural hazards
mitigation. The National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research
(NCEER) Information Service at SUNY/Buffalo produces the database. The
NCEER Information Service is funded by the National Science Foundation,
the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the NY state Science and
Technology Foundation. Also included are another 22,000 citations to the
books, reports, journals and other materials on earthquake engineering and
related subjects held in the SUNY/Buffalo collection. About 4,000 records
are added each year to QUAKELINE.

Earthquake Engineering Abstracts (1984-present) provides 25,000 citations
and abstracts on earthquake engineering and earthquake hazards mitigation.
The National Information Service for Earthquake Engineering (NISEE), a
public service project sponsored by the National Science Foundation,
maintains the database at the Earthquake Engineering Research Center
(EERC), University of California at Berkeley. The database also includes,
from the EERC Library, another 15,000 citations to reports, monographs,
serials, conference proceedings, slides, and videotapes. Coverage on the
1989 Loma Prieta, California earthquake is particularly strong. About
3,700 records are added each year.

Newcastle Earthquake Database (1989-present), from the Newcastle Region
Public Library of Australia, provides over 2,500 citations and abstracts
specifically on the 1989 Newcastle, Australia earthquake. Coverage on
structural and geological factors is strong, as is coverage on topics
related to the earthquake's aftermath, such as counselling,
reconstruction, and insurance.

Document delivery

QUAKELINE: All items are available through the NCEER Information Service
(716/645-3377).

EEA: All items are available through the EERC Library (510/231-9403).

Both libraries provide reference support and loan circulating materials
throughout the U.S. and Canada (postage reimbursement is required).
Noncirculating items can be photocopied for a nominal fee; materials can
also be faxed or delivered overnight upon request.

Newcastle: All items are available through the Newcastle Region Public
Library (61-49-258314 international).

Search these important subjects:

earthquakes; earthquake engineering
natural hazards mitigation
planning and public policy
seismology; engineering seismology
seismometry
dynamic properties of soils, rocks, & foundations
structural dynamics
earthquake-resistant construction
effects & aftermath of earthquakes
socio-economic aspects of disasters
seismic retrofit
earthquake prediction
volcanoes & volcanology
high-wind hazards; hurricanes; tornadoes
wind engineering
water-related disasters; flooding
hydraulic engineering; hydromechanics
coastal & river engineering geology
tsunamis
properties of materials & components

Source materials include periodical articles; conference proceedings;
technical reports; books; publications of worldwide academic,
professional, and governmental organizations; archival records; building
reports, codes, and surveys; newspaper articles; slide sets; theses;
videotapes; and software.

Composite records: A high percentage of the QUAKELINE records refer to
conference papers; this is balanced by a high concentration of journal
literature in the EEA database. Duplication between the two files
(approximately 15%) is resolved by NISC's software, which creates special
composite records that contain the information shared by two or more
source records, plus any data that is unique to a record. Composite
records provide all relevant information without the inconvenience of
duplicate citations.

Coverage: 1984-present (monographs from the 1900s); varies by database.
Semi-annual updates.

Software: Powerful ROMWright software, standard on all NISC DISCs, is
designed for intuitive use by beginners, experienced users, and
professionals requiring sophisticated search tools. Choose from among
three search modes: NOVICE, ADVANCED, and EXPERT. Features unparalleled
search speed, full Boolean and proximity retrieval, field-specific
indexes, and easy record display, sorting, and output. Administrators can
set options that control the interface, output, and LAN performance, e.g.,
choose only the EXPERT set-searching mode.

Hardware: Any DOS-capable PC (IBM-compatible)--single station or network;
any CD-ROM drive; monochrome or color monitor; 512k RAM available.

Price: $295.00 USD, annual subscription. Semi-annual updates. Shipping &
handling: $16.00. U.S., $30.00 outside U.S. LANs, single-site: 1 user: no
extra charge; 2-10 concurrent users: base price+50%; 11-20 users:
