Medieval and Early Modern Data Bank

Baltimore - National Information Services Corporation (NISC) is pleased to
publish the Medieval and Early Modern Data Bank (MEMDB) on CD-ROM. MEMDB
is a resource project established at Rutgers University and cosponsored by
the Research Libraries Group, Inc. (RLG). This expanding library of
175,000 records covers the medieval and early modern periods of European
history, circa A.D. 800-1815. MEMDB has both bibliographic and full-text
data, in four large data sets which can be searched together (by default),
individually, or in any combination:

o Currency exchange quotations compiled by Dr. Peter Spufford of the
University of Cambridge and published in his "Handbook of Medieval
Exchange" (1986).

o Prices drawn directly from primary sources and published in Volume 1 of
N.W. Posthumus's "Inquiry into the History of Prices in Holland" (1946).

o Grain prices supplied by Rainer Metz and compiled for the printed
edition of Dietrich Ebeling and Franz Irsigler, "Getreideumsatz, Getreide-
und Brotpreise in Koln 1368-1797," 2 vols. (1976-77).

o Monetary data from Rainer Metz "Geld, Wahrung und Preisentwicklung: Der
Niederrheinraum im europaischen Vergleich: 1350-1800" (1990).

NISC's state-of-the-art search-and-retrieval software makes it easy to work
with this sizable collection of historical data. Regardless of prior
computer experience, all MEMDB users like the software's many finishing
touches that make fast work of their research tasks. Background texts and
source references are shown on-screen with the data. You'll find it easy
to create and execute elaborate search strategies, the results of which
cast new light on life from the Dark Ages to the Age of Enlightenment.
