NEC ADDS TWO 600 DPI LASER PRINTERS TO ITS SILENTWRITER SUPERSCRIPT LINE

Boxborough, Mass., November 14, 1994 -- Reaffirming its commitment to
providing value-oriented, high-quality printers, NEC Technologies today
announced it will offer two feature-rich, true 600 x 600 dpi laser
printers. The new Silentwriter SuperScript 660 and 660i will join the
high-quality, cost-efficient Silentwriter SuperScript series.
"NEC is committed to providing our customers with the highest quality and
best performance at the lowest price point possible," said Peter Speen,
NEC Technologies' senior printer marketing manager. "Our two new printers
are very aggressively priced, making them an excellent choice for SOHO
users."

Silentwriter SuperScript 660

The SuperScript 660 is the first 600 dpi laser printer with an estimated
street price under $600. It utilizes the latest Windows native printing
environment, GDI, providing the fastest processing speeds (up to six pages
per minute). GDI technology uses the host computer's central processing
power to rasterize the printed output, thus, printed material is directly
affected by the system's configuration. Users can enhance the printer's
performance by upgrading the CPU or system RAM. In the Windows
environment, the user selected on-screen status feedback, utilizing
bi-directional parallel interface, gives them the choice of tracking their
print job with a traditional print job status indicator or an animated
graphic. A custom print status screen provides direct, on-screen control
of major printer settings and operational parameters. Even for DOS needs,
through software, the SuperScript 660 will emulate the industry standard
printer control language (PCL 5e), making it fully LaserJet 4P compatible.
There is an optional PostScript Level 2 upgrade, which is software-based.
The printer comes with a standard 50 page paper feeder. First ship date is
due in February.

Silentwriter SuperScript 660i

NEC's "intelligent" SuperScript 660i has an Intel i960 RISC processor
resident in the machine. It comes standard with 2 MB of RAM and is
user-upgradeable to 34 MB. The 660i uses printer resident, industry
standard printer control language (PCL5e), making it fully compatible with
any LaserJet 4P driver. Although the 660i may be compatible with the 4P,
its comparable features stop there. The SuperScript 660i has an estimated
street price under $800 and a processing speed of six pages per minute,
unlike any other comparable printer on the market.

Along with its low price and quick speed, the 660i can print in GDI mode or
has an optional PostScript Level 2 software upgrade. The Print Navigator
software, included with the printer, allows the user to change printer
settings, such as downloaded fonts or page orientation, from the DOS
environment. SuperScript 660 and 660i software for Windows includes many
of the same features associated with Print Navigator. It also incorporates
NEC's expanded, user-friendly features native to the GDI mode, such as
"Show Me" printer status, animated on-line "Error Message" help and manual
duplexing capabilities. The printer comes standard with a 200-page paper
feeder. First ship date is due in December.

Common Features and Warranty

The SuperScript 660 and 660i are fully EPA EnergyStar Compliant and utilize
the latest toner-saver mode to extend the life of the cartridge. Both
offer optional spot color at 600 dpi resolution. By simply switching the
black toner cartridge with the optional red, yellow or blue toner
cartridge, users can incorporate simple color overlays (i.e., logos and
watermarks) into their presentations. NEC has included an animated program
to easily "walk" their users through the process of printing with spot
color. The SuperScript 660 and 660i come standard with a two-year limited
overnight replacement warranty.

The Silentwriter Family

The Silentwriter SuperScript 610, introduced in August, 1993, was the first
laser printer to incorporate the graphical device interface (GDI).
Printing at 300 dpi and utilizing Sharp Edge Technology to enhance output
comparable to most 600 dpi printers, the SuperScript 610 has been an
excellent choice for SOHO users at an extremely low price point (under
$400). The Silentwriter 640, introduced in December, 1993, is a Macintosh
laser printer offering 300 dpi resolution, Sharp Edge Technology and true
Adobe PostScript Level 2 language, all at a price point lower than
comparable Macintosh laser printers. Now with the addition of the
Silentwriter SuperScript 660 and 660i, NEC once again raises the level of
quality by offering true 600 x 600 dpi technology at a price point
hundreds of dollars less than its closest competition.
