NEC ADDS NEW BRILLIANCE TO COLOR PRINTER MARKET WITH ITS SUPERSCRIPT COLOR
3000

Boxborough, Mass., November 14, 1994 -- Painting its way into the color
printer market, NEC Technologies today announced the SuperScript Color
3000 thermal transfer/dye sublimation color printer. At a price point
thousands of dollars less than its competition, the SuperScript Color 3000
redefines the color market's price performance expectations.

"Our low-cost, high-quality output SuperScript Color 3000 printer will
directly challenge the color ink jet and thermal transfer, dye sub printer
market," said Jim Forrest, NEC Technologies' senior printer marketing
manager. "Our brilliant output and estimated street price at under $1,000
will obviously catch peoples' attention."

The Silentwriter SuperScript Color 3000 offers a high print quality
alternative to the midrange color ink jet printers at a reasonable price
comparison. At the other end of the price spectrum, the SuperScript Color
3000 offers a value-oriented alternative to the much higher priced thermal
transfer and dye sublimation printers.

Intuitive Proofing

The SuperScript Color 3000 is extremely versatile. It offers three printing
modes: thermal transfer, Graphic Color (variable dot thermal transfer or
VT2) and Photo Color (dye sublimation). The three modes give users various
levels of print quality while providing the ability to produce a fast,
economical way of proofing your work before switching to the
higher-quality Graphic Color or Photo Color modes. Depending on the job,
thermal transfer provides the lowest cost per page and fastest output of
the three modes. Graphic Color (VT2) produces output amazingly close to
Photo Color mode at a lower cost per page. NEC is the first to offer
Graphic Color at a reasonable price to the office printer market. Photo
Color mode is an excellent choice for any final draft, producing the most
brilliant, color-rich output available.

Smart Enough to Share the Load

The SuperScript Color 3000 is a licensed Microsoft "Windows Printing
System" (WPS) printer. Relying on the host computer to process the printed
information, the SuperScript Color 3000 is directly affected by the system
configuration: minimum requirements are 4 MB RAM and a 486 processor
running at 25 MHz. Users can enhance the printer's performance by
upgrading the CPU or system RAM.

One Glance Is All It Takes

A vital component to the SuperScript Color 3000's output begins with its
easy-to-use, customizable software driver. The software gives users
instant on-screen access to many of the key features. Relying on the
enhanced parallel interface, the bi-directional querying automatically
reports the status of the printer. At a glance, users know which of the
three modes the printer is currently utilizing. The easy-to-understand
animated icons display printer job status and report any problems, such as
"out of paper" or "cable connection" error messages.

Strike a Match

Unique to the SuperScript Color 3000 is its custom color matching
capabilities. This gives the user unparalleled flexibility to optimize
color matching schemes with each unique application. The user can manually
choose from four settings: "enhanced color," which is recommended for
business graphics (i.e. charts and graphs); "screen matching," which is
recommended for printing photo images; "grayscale," for printing black and
white photos; and "none," for applications with their own color matching
capabilities. With the SuperScript Color 3000's extremely low price point
and abundantly rich features, it is perfectly suited for business
presenters, graphic artists, photographers or home hobbyists.

Pricing, Warranty and Availability

The SuperScript Color 3000 has an estimated street price of under $ 1,000.
It comes standard with a one year limited overnight replacement warranty.
First product shipment is due in December.
