MathSoft and Saltire Jointly Develop an Interactive Electronic Book:
Parametric Sketching for Engineering Analysis with Mathcad and Apollonius

Cambridge, Massachusetts--October 27, 1994--Saltire Software, Inc. and
MathSoft, Inc. today announced a jointly developed Electronic
Book--Parametric Sketching for Engineering Analysis with Mathcad and
Apollonius This book is based on Saltire's constraint-based geometry
package Apollonius--The Intelligent Sketcher, with built-in links to
MathSoft's mathematics software package Mathcad. A full copy of Apollonius
is included with the Electronic Book. It provides a completely interactive
environment for geometrical design integrated with mathematical
computations.

The Electronic Book, Parametric Sketching for Engineering Analysis with
Mathcad and Apollonius contains a variety of examples linking the
geometric analysis capabilities of Apollonius with the mathematical
capabilities of Mathcad. These examples come from such diverse fields as
mechanical engineering, civil engineering, education, geophysical
modeling, optics, and fluid mechanics.

"This collaboration demonstrates another area where interactive electronic
books can add a great deal of value to the subject material," said David
Leschinsky, director, MathSoft electronic publishing alliances.
"Engineers, educators and students will find this an invaluable tool to
visualize their design and analysis."

Apollonius is an easy-to-use drawing system. The user first sketches the
geometry of a layout and then adds the dimensions. Apollonius then
automatically re-draws the sketch to scale and calculates any required
geometrical properties such as areas and moments of inertia The system
dramatically reduces design time. Users can embed a variational geometry
model developed in Apollonius into their Mathcad document. Dynamic links
can be created from Mathcad variables to parameters of the geometric model
and from drawing measurements into Mathcad variables, thus allowing a
completely interactive geometric and mathematical description of the
problem and its solution. The Apollonius models can be exported via the
DXF standard file format directly to the user's CAD systems for detailed
dimensioning and annotation.

Mathcad is a powerful tool that removes the burdensome mechanics of
calculation, enabling exploration and experimentation. With Mathcad, users
can perform numeric and symbolic calculations, from simple to complex, and
document the results. It offers an interactive, intuitive and
easy-to-modify alternative to calculators, spreadsheets and programming
languages to a broad base of technical professionals, educators and
students. MathSoft's Electronic Books provide readers with live,
interactive access to mathematics based on popular reference works
including over 40 titles in engineering, the physical sciences,
statistics, mathematics, finance and education.

According to Philip Todd, Saltire vice president of research and
development, "The combination of variational geometry with a full-featured
mathematical software environment has long been recognized as ideal for
many types of engineering design. In the past, this has only been
available in specialized conceptual design programs. The combination of
Mathcad and Apollonius provides these features in an economical
configuration, embedded in the leading mathematical software
environment."

software for mechanical engineers, educators and students. Saltire's
family of engineering products include Apollonius, Analytix, Dynamix and
the Atlas of Linkage Design and Analysis. On top of Apollonius' parametric
drawing capability, the other products add full kinematic, static, dynamic
and tolerance analysis. Since its founding in 1989, Saltire has developed
products for PC, Macintosh, and Newton platforms. Saltire has received two
major R&D grants from the National Science Foundation to pursue basic
research in the representation and manipulation of geometrical engineering
problems.

MathSoft, Inc. (NASDAQ: MATH) is the leading developer of mathematical
software and Electronic Books for desktop computers. Founded in 1984, the
company developed Mathcad, a live, interactive environment for mathematics
work in a variety of fields, including engineering, science and education.
Mathcad is currently available for PC, Macintosh, and UNIX workstations;
and in German, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Italian. MathSoft is the
