Cymbolic Sciences Enters the 4x5-inch Digital Transparency Market With the
Fire 450 Color Film Recorder

Cymbolic Sciences (CSI) enters the fast growing 4x5-inch digital
transparency market with the Fire 450 Color Film Recorder. The
high-resolution film recorder is targeted at commercial color labs,
service bureaus, desktop publishers and the prepress industry. The Fire
450 with FireWare Lite is priced at $79,000 will be available for customer
shipments starting January 1995.

Image Size and Resolution

The Fire 450's maximum image size is 4x5-inches with a plot resolution of
1270 lines per inch (RES 50). A unique feature is the ability to plot
"2-up" where two 4x5 images can be plotted next to each other on the same
piece of film, thereby increasing system throughput and operator
productivity, and reducing film waste. The system's 16-point bi-cubic
pixel interpolator allows low-resolution data files to be output as
high-resolution digital transparencies.

Plot Time

A 4x5-inch image is plotted DIRECTLY from the workstation's disk in 9
minutes. Pixel interpolation, color correction, density linearization and
image transfer from the workstation's disk are all done in real-time,
while the Fire 450 is plotting, with no time penatlies whatsoever.

Input Support

The Fire 450 supports a variety of uncompressed data formats and inputs,
including:

- TIFF
- Targa
- Scitex CT
- Alias PIX
- Kodak Photo CD/Precision Color Look-Up-Tables
- Default Look-Up-Tables for RGB, CMY and CMYK Scanners

FireWare Lite Film Recorder Software

A new version of CSI's popular film recorder control software, FireWare
Lite, is included in the configuration. FireWare Lite controls all
essential film recorder functions on the industry's most popular
workstations:

- Macintosh Quadra
- Power Macintosh
- Silicon Graphics (SGI)
- i486 and Pentium PCs
- Sun Microsystems

FireWare Lite supports multi-tasking on Silicon Graphics and Sun
Microsystems workstations. Closed-loop color calibration between the Fire
450, film emulsion and film processor is used to achieve optimum gray
scale balance.

Film Types

The Fire 450 produces high-resolution 4x5-inch continuous-tone images using
standard 9.5-inch roll film Kodak: Ektachrome 100 Electronic Output Film,
Vericolor III and Pro 100 negative film, and T-Max 100.

Upgrade Path

The Fire 450 can be ungraded in the field to include all the functions of
the market leading Fire 1000+ and FireWare Pro. The Fire 1000+ features an
8x10 image area and FireWare Pro includes dual closed-loop color
calibration between the input scanner and film processor.
