SOFTQUAD SHIPS FIRST ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING TOOL WITH HYTIME

Toronto, Ontario. SoftQuad ships SoftQuad Explorer 1.0 -- an intuitive new
generation of electronic publishing tool, also the first commercial tool
for authoring in HyTime.

SoftQuad Explorer is an electronic delivery tool that incorporates
navigation, organization, annotation, management, output functions -- and
now the flexibility of hypertext linking with HyTime -- into a single
program. And because Explorer is built on SGML the same content can be
reused in a variety of end products without additional effort or
rekeying.

"Explorer was designed for the specific needs of electronic publishers."
said Yuri Rubinsky, president of SoftQuad. "And with its additional strong
capabilities in content delivery, information management and browsing, it
really does represent a new generation of software."

Electronic delivery allows publishers to generate new revenue by
republishing previous works from other media. Explorer includes automated
interactive filing and indexing, user-defined hierarchical views for
grouping similar documents together, and highly customized navigators for
searching by SGML element. Every feature a publisher could need has been
anticipated, integrated and automated.

"Explorer impressed me by being the first browser to really do SGML right."
said Eliot Kimber, formerly of IBM and now with Passage Systems. "Further,
it impressed me by being the first browser to do HyTime."

The added value of HyTime's hypertext linking means publishers with
Explorer can create hypertext links not only inside documents but between
them. These links can be coded directly into SGML documents and resolved
automatically by Explorer when the document is filed, or they can be added
to the files already in Explorer through its web feature. All hyper
objects in the web -- links, notes, bookmarks, highlighting -- can be
exported as a HyTime document and exchanged with other editors or
readers.

Publisher-Viewer-Browser

The full functionality of Explorer is available in the SoftQuad Explorer
Publisher version which is used to create the electronic media. Explorer
also includes Browser and Viewer versions which a publisher can include
along with a distribution. Resource developers can configure these
end-user tools for the anticipated needs of their various audiences, based
on the supplied set of functionalities. The unconfigured Browser has a
broad range of linking and annotating tools while the Viewer is very
basic.

Pricing and Availability

SoftQuad Explorer is available on Microsoft Windows at a list price of
$9,990 us. It will be available on Sun SPARC later in the year and on
Macintosh in 1995.

Single pricing for the publisher-configurable Explorer Browser is $89 with
aggressive volume pricing.
