EXABYTE ANNOUNCES SHIPMENT OF ITS 7-GIGABYTE EXB-8505XL BY OEMS WORLDWIDE

EXB-8505XL Now Also Available Through Distribution

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Nov. 14, 1994 -- Exabyte Corp. (NASDAQ: EXBT) today
announced shipment of its EXB-8505XL 8mm Cartridge Tape Subsystem by a
number of original equipment manufacturers worldwide. AT&T Global
Information Solutions, ICL and Sun Microsystems Computer Co. are currently
shipping the EXB-8505XL; Intergraph will begin shipping the EXB-8505XL
shortly. Introduced by Exabyte five months ago in June 1994, the
EXB-8505XL is on display this week at the computer industry trade show
COMDEX/Fall '94.

A 5.25-inch half-high 8mm tape drive, the EXB-8505XL offers 40 percent more
capacity than Exabyte's popular EXB-8505, for the same price. Using
extended-length media, the drive records 7 gigabytes of uncompressed data
per cartridge (compared to the EXB-8505's 5 gigabytes) at a rate of 500
kilobytes per second. With standard hardware data compression, which on
average doubles capacity an
transfer rate, the EXB-8505XL can record 14 gigabytes of data at 1 megabyte
per second.

Further addressing the storage requirements of high-performance midrange
systems, servers, workstations and PC LANs, the EXB-8505XL offers
unsurpassed reliability of 160,000 hours mean-time-between-failures and a
bit error rate of less than one in 1017 bits read. Built into the drive
are onboard error recovery and correction, and full read-after-write
verification. The EXB-8505XL is SCSI-2 compatible and can be configured
for synchronous or asynchronous transfer. It has full read-and-write
compatibility with Exabyte's large 8mm tape drive installed based, and
comes with a two-year warranty.

"We're pleased to have compiled such an impressive early list of OEMs for
the EXB-8505XL, with more to follow," said Peter D. Behrendt, Exabyte's
chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer. "Because it
offers two extra gigabytes of storage--at no additional cost--and almost
twice the capacity of current 4mm DDS-2 tape drives, the EXB-8505XL is a
product that really meets today's storage requirements."

Like previous-generation 8mm drives, the EXB-8505XL uses 8mm data-grade
metal particle media designed specifically for 8mm tape storage
subsystems. Unlike other 8mm drives, the EXB-8505XL uses the EXATAPE 160m
XL 8mm Data Cartridge to achieve its higher capacities. Thinner than 112m,
54m and 15m media, EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm media offers EXB-8505XL users
greater capacity with the same exceptional recording characteristics,
durability and archivability. The EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm Data Cartridge is
designed only for use in the EXB-8505XL. The EXB-8505XL is capable of
reading and writing on all other data-grade 8mm media, including 112m, 54m
and 15m media.

Exabyte made minor deck changes to the EXB-8505XL to accommodate the new
EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm Data Cartridge. These modifications affect the tape
load/unload function only; the head-to-tape interface remains the same.
Other changes include process, production and reliability improvements.

Like other half-high 8mm drives, the EXB-8505XL is designed for easy
integration into Exabyte's family of half-high libraries. When configured
with EXB-8505XL tape drives, the new EXB-210 8mm Library provides 70
gigabytes of uncompressed automated storage, a 40-percent boost over
EXB-8505s. When EXB-8505XL tape drives are incorporated into the EXB-480
8mm Library (volume shipments of which were announced today), uncompressed
storage reaches 560 gigabytes, up from 400 gigabytes when configured with
EXB-8505s.

Exabyte also announced today that, in addition to OEMs and system
integrators, the EXB-8505XL is now available through distributors.

Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., Exabyte Corp. designs, manufactures and
markets a full range of tape storage products: 8mm, 4mm and quarter-inch
minicartridge tape drives, tape libraries and recording media. Exabyte is
the world's largest independent manufacturer focused solely on tape
storage products, which it ships to original equipment manufacturers,
value-added resellers and distributors. # # #
