EXABYTE ANNOUNCES SHIPMENT OF SECOND AND THIRD LIBRARY IN ITS 8MM HALF-HIGH
LIBRARY FAMILY

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Nov. 14, 1994 -- Exabyte Corp. (NASDAQ: EXBT) today
announced volume shipments of its EXB-480 and EXB-440 8mm Tape Libraries,
extending the company's family of 8mm half-high libraries. This library
family, including the EXB-210, EXB440 and EXB-480, currently offers from
50 gigabytes to more than 1 terabyte of data storage capacity, addressing
the storage needs of large networks, midrange systems and mainframes.
Because all of Exabyte's 8mm half-high libraries use Exabyte's 8mm
half-high drives interchangeably, users can meet their growing storage
needs and preserve their investment in Exabyte architecture by adding
future higher capacity drives to Exabyte's libraries.

Exabyte is the only 8mm company that manufactures both libraries and tape
drives, ensuring optimal compatibility and synergy between both devices.
This synergy also offers a simple upgrade path. For example, the EXB-480,
when configured with the EXB-8505XL 8mm Cartridge Tape Subsystem, offers
560 gigabytes of uncompressed data storage capacity. As users' storage
needs increase, the EXB-8505XL drives can be replaced with Mammoth,
Exabyte's announced 20-gigabyte 8mm tape drive, to increase the EXB-480's
native data storage capacity to 1.6 terabytes and increase throughput
six-fold.

In conjunction with the shipment of these libraries, Exabyte has increased
the libraries' reliability specification from 200,000
mean-cycles-between-failures (MCBF) -- the specification assigned when the
libraries were first announced in October 1993 -- to 750,000 MCBF, and to
1.5 million tape mounts. Six months of field data gathered for the EXB-210
8mm Library, high commonality in parts within this library family and the
EXB-440 and EXB-480's successful beta programs allowed Exabyte to increase
these specifications.

"The shipment of these 8mm libraries represents a breakthrough in the
industry," said Peter D. Behrendt, Exabyte's chairman of the board,
president and chief executive officer. 'With the EXB-440 and EXB-480's
superior design and reliability, we are able to offer our customers better
solutions for their data storage needs, including the newer applications
requiring tape libraries such as HSM and video-on-demand."

These new libraries will initially ship to Exabyte's original equipment
manufacturer and value added reseller customers. Exabyte will also ship
the EXB-440 and EXB-480 through distributors to resellers who have
received certification through Exabyte's Qualified Library Reseller
program, announced in September of this year.

The EXB-440 incorporates up to four 5.25-inch 8mm half-high drives with 40
8mm data cartridges. Exabyte's innovative design allows the EXB-440 to be
upgraded to an EXB-480, which holds up to 80 data cartridges and
incorporates up to four 5.25-inch half-high drives, all in a package the
size of a small file cabinet.

The EXB-440 and EXB-480 have a sleek, modular cabinet design and can stand
alone or be rack-mounted. Both libraries offer an additional fixed
cartridge location that can be used either for a cleaning cartridge, or an
additional 8mm cartridge.

Other EXB-440 and EXB-480 features include:

* Snap-in 10-pack cartridge holders that, when removed, can be covered
  and stored
* Standard fast bar-code reader that scans labels, performing tape
  inventory and detecting cartridge positions
* User-friendly LCD interface and operating panel
* Entry/exit port to insert or remove one cartridge at a time
* Easy front access to tape drives and data cartridges
* Clear window to see tapes and robotics
* Modular design that maximizes data availability by allowing easy
  serviceability

The EXB-440 and EXB-480 include a newly-designed robotics mechanism with an
intelligent gripper that picks a tape from the magazine and mounts it in
less than 10 seconds, and a key lock and security interlock for data
protection.

Coupled with software available from Exabyte resellers, the new libraries
will completely automate operations such as hierarchical storage
management, unattended backup and restore, scheduled archiving, image
storage, remote vaulting, disaster prevention and data collection.

When configured with Exabyte's EXB-8505XL 8mm tape cartridge subsystem, the
EXB480 offers 560 gigabytes of uncompressed data storage capacity, while
the EXB-440 offers 280 gigabytes of uncompressed data storage capacity.
Both libraries offer an aggregate native transfer rate of 2 megabytes per
second, backing up 7.2 gigabytes per hour using 8505XL drives. When
configured with Mammoth, Exabyte's announced 20-gigabyte 8mm tape drive,
the EXB-480 will offer up to 1.6 terabytes of native data storage
capacity, and the EXB-440 will offer 800 gigabytes of uncompressed data
storage capacity. With Mammoth, both the EXB-480 and EXB440 will offer
aggregate native transfer rates of 12 megabytes per second, backing up
43.2 gigabytes per hour. Capacity and transfer rate will double with
compression.

The EXB-440 and EXB-480 offer distinct design enhancements over the
company's popular line of full-high libraries. These include a 500 percent
increase in reliability, performance that decreases the cartridge mount
time from 20 seconds to 10 seconds, drives whose form factor is half the
size, and a clear upgrade path with the advent of Mammoth and its
successors.

The EXB-440 library is expected to have an end-user price of between
$40,000 and $60,000. The anticipated end-user price of the EXB-480 with
drives and software is between $60,000 and $100,000. Prices for both
libraries will vary depending on the configuration and software.

According to industry analysis from the firm Peripheral Strategies of Santa
Barbara, Calif., Exabyte accounted for 81 percent of overall 8mm tape
library sales in 1993, making the company today's undisputed market
leader.

Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., Exabyte Corp. designs, manufactures and
markets a full range of tape storage products: 8mm, 4mm and quarter-inch
minicartridge tape drives, tape libraries and recording media Exabyte is
the world's largest independent manufacturer focused solely on tape
products, which it ships to original equipment manufacturers, value-added
resellers and distributors.
