EXABYTE SHIPS MILESTONE 15,000TH 8MM TAPE LIBRARY

Growth in Library Sales Attributed to Marketing Efforts, Software
Availability and Migration to More Sophisticated Applications

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Nov. 14, 1994 -- Exabyte Corp. (NASDAQ: EXBT) today
announced that it has shipped its 15,000th 8mm tape library, marking
another milestone in its leadership of this rapidly growing market. The
announcement was made at COMDEX/Fall '94, where a number of Exabyte
products, including libraries, are on display this week.

Exabyte's line of tape libraries combine tape drives, data cartridges and
intelligent robotics in reliable, space-saving enclosures. Depending on
the model and the configuration of drives and data cartridges, Exabyte
libraries provide the end user with data storage capacities ranging from
50 gigabytes to up to 3.2 terabytes. Utilizing multiple-source software,
the libraries transcend sheer capacity to completely automate data storage
management. In physical size, the libraries range from tabletop models to
one slightly smaller than a four-drawer filing cabinet. All cost only
pennies per megabyte to own. According to industry analysis from the firm
Peripheral Strategies, Exabyte accounted for 81 percent of overall 8mm
tape library sales in 1993, making the company today's undisputed market
leader.

"High capacity makes Exabyte libraries extremely attractive, but of
additional benefit is the way the libraries increase productivity and
lower costs by automating storage management," said Peter D. Behrendt,
Exabyte's chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer.

Behrendt pointed out that, by automating storage management, Exabyte
libraries can reduce by 30 percent to 50 percent the cost of doing the
same procedures by hand. For a typical, 5-gigabyte, 500,000-file network,
the cost of performing storage management manually can approach $100,000
per

"End users continue to realize the cost benefits associated with
automation, and have made 8mm tape libraries a growing market," Behrendt
added. "In fact, Exabyte's sales of these products doubled in 1993."
Peripheral Strategies estimates that the overall tape library market will
continue to grow. End users are expected to spend $3 billion on tape
libraries between 1993 and 1997.

One factor identified by Behrendt that is driving automation is the
continued migration from simple backup and restore to more sophisticated
applications requiring automated data storage management. Such
applications include archiving, hierarchical storage management (HSM),
image storage, disaster prevention and data collection. Another factor is
the increased availability of library software that performs automation.
Development efforts between Exabyte and its software partners have
resulted in library software designed for a range of platforms, including
Novell Netware, Sun Solaris, HP UX, Windows NT, and IBM OS/2, AIX and
MVS.

In addition to the increased need and ability to automate, another reason
for the growth in Exabyte's library sales is the company's own marketing
efforts. As an example, Behrendt pointed to the Qualified Library Reseller
Program recently started by Exabyte to help national resellers sell,
support and service the company's tape libraries. Resellers selected to
join the program are authorized to purchase Exabyte libraries from
qualified distributors, and receive up-front and ongoing sales and
technical support training from Exabyte. Service training is also
available, and resellers have the option to sell third-party maintenance
contracts. In addition, Exabyte Qualified Library Resellers have access to
Exabyte marketing and sales tools, and direct sales support with qualified
leads.

Three of Exabyte's current nine libraries are new-generation models that
feature dual half-high drives for parallel processing, fault tolerance and
improved performance. All provide the benefit of field experience in their
design and include enhanced robotics, security features and user-friendly
interface controls. The newer models are modular in design (the drives,
data cartridge holders and power supply can be easily moved in and out of
the body of the library), allowing for easy serviceability. The robust
design of these models results in the highest level of reliability
available in the tape library market today. Exabyte's new-generation
libraries were introduced in September 1993 with reliability of 200,000
mean-cycles-between-failure (MCBF). On the basis of actual field results,
reliability for these models was recently increased to 750,000 MCBF, or
1.5 million tape mounts. Among the new-generation models are the
50-gigabyte to 154-gigabyte EXB-210 8mm Library (shipping since early
second-quarter 1994) and the 200-gigabyte to 1.1-terabyte EXB-440/480 8mm
Library. Volume shipments of the EXB-440/480 were announced today.

Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., Exabyte Corp. designs, manufactures and
markets a full range of tape storage products: 8mm, 4mm and quarter-inch
minicartridge tape drives, tape libraries and recording media. Exabyte is
the world's largest independent manufacturer focused solely on tape
storage products, which it ships to original equipment manufacturers,
value-added resellers and distributors.
