Digital Announces Industry's First Integrated System And Network Management
Platforms On Windows NT

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- November 15, 1994 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced the industry's first integrated multivendor system and
network management platforms on Windows NT. These platforms provide a
robust PC-based environment for the delivery of enterprise management
solutions.

For hardware and software system management, Digital announced the
availability of POLYCENTER AssetWORKS -- an extension of the management
scope of Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS) to multivendor UNIX
and OpenVMS systems. For open network management, Digital announced the
availability of a software developers' kit for POLYCENTER Manager on
NetView for Windows NT Workstation -- a port of the industry-leading
NetView network management platform, jointly developed by Digital and
IBM.

AssetWORKS and NetView have also been designed to interoperate as peers,
sharing information and moving easily between applications. This combined
platform is an industry first, establishing Digital as the leader in
providing enterprise management solutions on Windows NT.

"Our major customers are embracing Windows NT and need industrial strength
management applications. This announcement is our first step in delivering
comprehensive management solutions for Windows NT," said Nancy Strecker,
vice president, Digital Software Products. "These exciting new POLYCENTER
products demonstrate Digital's continued leadership in managing open
client/server environments."

"Our customers are looking for integrated management tools for their
enterprise. Combining System Management Server, a comprehensive solution
for managing distributed PCs, with other world-class tools, such as
POLYCENTER AssetWORKS and POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for Windows NT
Workstation, results in a powerful, integrated, enterprise management
solution," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president of Microsoft's Business
Systems Division.

Managing enterprise system and software assets

POLYCENTER AssetWORKS makes it easy for customers to gain control of their
hardware and software investments, and reduce operating costs. AssetWORKS
is a Windows NT Workstation application based on Microsoft's Systems
Management Server which extends the inventory and software distribution
and installation capabilities to multivendor UNIX systems -- SunOS,
Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, DEC OSF/1, and ULTRIX -- and OpenVMS.

AssetWORKS also enhances SMS by providing easy-to-use pre-defined and
customizable reports. These reports include system inventory, software by
system, system by software, job status and many others. All data is
consolidated in an SQL database to all for easy customization.

POLYCENTER AssetWORKS utilizes the same easy-to-use graphical user
interface as SMS, and adds the new UNIX and OpenVMS clients and reporting
capabilities. The other SMS clients include a wide range of PCs -- MS-DOS,
Windows, Windows NT Workstation, OS/2, and Macintosh -- and networked
server environments -- NetWare, LAN Manager, PATHWORKS, Windows for
Workgroups, and Windows NT Server. It also supports wide area networking
protocols such as TCP/IP, DECnet, IPX/SPX, ISDN, SNA, and X.25. In
combination, AssetWORKS and SMS provide configuration management for all
desktops and servers.

AssetWORKS is part of the Software Utility, a partnership with customers to
bring flexible solutions to the challenges of managing software and
hardware assets. The Software Utility provides leading-edge tools and
services to help customers leverage their software budgets, achieve the
most efficient utilization of their people and software assets from
acquisition to retirement.

POLYCENTER AssetWORKS will be available in December, 1994 on both Intel and
Alpha processors. An AssetWORKS and SMS server packaged together is priced
at $1500. Agent prices vary from $25 to $250 depending on the number of
agents purchased and the operating systems supported.

Industrial strength network management from a PC

POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for Windows NT Workstation is based on the
NetView product jointly developed by Digital and IBM which currently runs
on OSF/1, AIX, and Solaris. POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for Windows NT
Workstation combines the ease-of-use of Windows 95 style with NetView's
award-winning MOTIF graphical user interface (GUI) to enhance its
usability.

The software developer's kit for POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for Windows
NT Workstation will be available in December at no cost through the
NetView Association, which recently expanded its support to include
Windows NT.

This announcement meets the needs of UNIX and Windows management
application developers who want to make the move to support Windows NT.
UNIX vendors are attracted to the large market opportunity which the
Windows NT platform provides. Windows vendors are looking for the
horsepower to scale their applications to do management of fast-growing
campus, wide area, and enterprise environments. The Windows NT software
developers kit will give applications vendors the tools to integrate their
applications with an industrial strength network management platform.

Integrated Windows NT management platform

Together, POLYCENTER AssetWORKS and POLYCENTER Manager on NetView provide
powerful functionality for both system and network management. The
interoperability between these products is on a peer-to-peer level, with
each application sharing information with the other, and utilizes the open
APIs which provide the critical ability to create a very tightly
integrated management solution. Developers can choose to use these same
mechanisms for a tight level of integration or may choose to use simpler
approaches such as launching their applications.

New NetView Association members for Windows NT

In response to the recent expansion of the NetView Association to Windows
NT, Digital announced that over 15 vendors have signed contracts to port
their applications to Windows NT.

The NetView Association is jointly sponsored by Digital and IBM and is a
full-service direct support program for independent network and systems
management application, SNMP MIB, and service vendors who support the
NetView products. Services include loaner software, technical support,
training, product qualification testing, distribution of vendor-specific
SNMP MIBs, plus marketing and trade show support.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in managed open
client/server solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide
information systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage,
networking, software and services, together with industry-focused
solutions from business partners, help organizations compete and win in
today's global marketplace.
