Digital Reinforces Leadership In Windows NT With Powerful New Solutions

AlphaStation, AlphaServer, and System and Network Management Products
Demonstrated at Digital's COMDEX Booth

LAS VEGAS (COMDEX) -- Nov. 14, 1994 --Digital Equipment Corporation is
demonstrating several new Windows NT capabilities at COMDEX that further
reinforce its position as the premier provider of Windows NT systems for
the enterprise.

Windows NT products and technologies being demonstrated include the
operating system running on the company's powerful new AlphaStation and
AlphaServer systems, and newly available, integrated system and network
management platforms on Windows NT -- POLYCENTER AssetWORKS and POLYCENTER
Manager on NetView for Windows NT. Digital will also have a technology
demonstration of Digital Clusters for Windows NT, a key capability that
will accelerate Windows NT adoption in the enterprise.

"Windows NT is clearly a strategic platform for Digital, as our customers
and partners increasingly demand products and services that support the
operating system," said Enrico Pesatori, vice president and general
manager, Computer Systems Group, at Digital. "Through our joint
development efforts and partnership with Microsoft, Digital has become a
leader in providing comprehensive, affordable and powerful Windows NT
solutions on both Intel and RISC platforms."

Windows NT/AlphaStation and Alpha Servers

Demonstrated at COMDEX will be Windows NT on Digital's next generation of
AlphaStation and AlphaServer hardware platforms, announced by the company
on November 3. The AlphaStation product family combines the high
performance and superior graphics typical of UNIX workstations with the
compatibility and openness of PCs. The AlphaServer products feature large
memory and storage capacity and industry-standard Peripheral Component
Interconnect (PCI) to complement their scalable processor power.

"The new AlphaStation and AlphaServer products provide customers increased
choice and flexibility for Windows NT," said David Flawn, director of
marketing, Windows NT at Digital. "PC users benefit by having the same,
consistent Windows interface they are accustomed to, on top of a powerful
system for developing and integrating applications."

There are 815 applications for Windows NT on Alpha being used today, and
more than 2,100 committed for Alpha/Windows NT in the near future, Flawn
added.

Integrated System and Network Management Platforms

Also demonstrated in the show booth are the industry's first integrated
multivendor system and network management platforms on Windows NT,
announced today by Digital.

POLYCENTER AssetWORKS, a Windows NT Workstation application based on
Microsoft's System Management Server (SMS), makes it easy for customers to
gain control of their hardware and software investments, and reduce
operating costs. The application extends the inventory and software
distribution and installation capabilities to multivendor UNIX systems --
SunOS, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, DEC OSF/1, and ULTRIX -- and OpenVMS.
AssetWORKS also enhances SMS by providing easy-to-use pre-defined and
customizable reports, including system inventory, software by system,
system by software, job status and many others.

For open network management, Digital announced the availability of a
software developers' kit for POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for Windows NT
Workstation -- a port of the NetView network management platform jointly
developed by Digital and IBM. The product combines the ease-of-use of
Windows 95 style with NetView's MOTIF graphical user interface to enhance
its usability.

"Our major customers are embracing Windows NT and need industrial strength
management applications. This announcement is our first step in delivering
comprehensive management solutions for Windows NT," said Nancy Strecker,
vice president, Digital Software Products. "These exciting new POLYCENTER
products demonstrate Digital's continued leadership in managing open
client/server environments."

POLYCENTER AssetWORKS will be available in December 1994 on both Intel and
Alpha processors. An AssetWORKS and SMS server packaged together is priced
at $1500. Agent prices vary from $25 to 250 depending on the number of
agents purchased and the operating systems supported. The software
developer's kit for POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for Windows NT
Workstation will be available in December at no cost through the NetView
Association, which recently expanded its support to include Windows NT.

Clusters for Windows NT

Digital will also have a technology demonstration of its Clusters for
Windows NT product. Clusters, a technology solution pioneered by Digital,
are loosely coupled sets of systems that behave like a single system while
providing high levels of availability through redundant CPUs, storage and
data paths. Clusters for Windows NT is being designed from the ground up
to bring the benefits of distributed availability and scalability to
client/server workloads and usage models.

"Companies deploying client/server solutions are concerned about system
reliability and cost-effective growth paths," said Flawn. "Clusters for
Windows NT will address these critical concerns by enhancing the
availability, scalability, and management of data and key services within
a client/server LAN environment."

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage, networking, software
and services, together with industry-focused solutions from business
partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global
marketplace.
