APPLE SHIPS CONNECTIX DESKTOP UTILITIES (CDU) FOR ENERGY STAR COMPLIANCE

Bundles CDU with every Power Mac 7100 and 8100

November 3, 1994, San Mateo, CA- Connectix Corporation today announced a
cooperative agreement with Apple Computer, Inc. to include a copy of the
award-winning Connectix Desktop Utilities with every Power Macintosh 7100
and 8100. This agreement enables Apple to meet future EPA Energy Star
requirements and to continue to ship these systems with the US
Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star designation. This
designation is an important requirement for marketing personal computers
to the federal government and, increasingly, to other large
organizations.

CDU is a critically-acclaimed, integrated collection of sixteen popular
Macintosh utilities. Among other features, it includes power management
functions that automatically turn off a Mac at the end of the business day
and return the system to its prior state upon restart the next morning.

CDU is the first software product that the EPA has authorized to bear the
Energy Star logo as a Controlling Device for Macintosh CPUs. Energy Star
Controlling Devices are designed to be added to personal computers that do
not have built in "sleep" functionality. The add-on devices allow these
computers to enter into and return from a low-power state in a manner
which is both convenient and efficient in reducing power consumption. To
be approved, a device must meet specifications published by the EPA on
March 29, 1994 in the Memorandum of Understanding for Controlling Device
Companies.

Apple Computers which have been designated as compliant at the time of
manufacture, remain so. Apple will start to include CDU on the 7100 and
8100 to ensure continued compliance as the EPA's requirements evolve.
Apple will not be updating older systems to meet future EPA requirements.

Connectix Desktop Utilities continues to be generally available as a
commercial product. Connectix has retained all right, title, and interest
in CDU. Existing Macintosh owners who did not receive CDU bundled with
their systems will still be able to purchase CDU through commercial
distribution outlets. CDU has a suggested retail price of $99 and is
available at over 2000 retail locations in the US for a street price of
under $65.

EPA estimates that an average office Macintosh uses approximately $100 of
electricity a year if kept powered 24 hours a day. CDU typically reduces
power consumption in such a case by over 80%. Consequently, the cost of
CDU is usually paid back in just a few months.

In a related development, EPA approved a combination of CDU and the
Sophisticated Circuits' PowerKey as an Energy Star Controlling Device for
the Power Macintosh 6100. The PowerKey is required on the 6100 (but not
the 7100 and 8100) because the 6100 has a manual power control switch
instead of pure software control. Power Switch/CDU combinations for the
6100 will be marketed to the federal government through major government
resellers.

Users may obtain information about installing CDU and using the Energy Star
features from Apple at 800/SOS-APPLE. Questions about other parts of CDU
should be directed to Connectix.
