CLARIS ANNOUNCES CLARISWORKS 3.0 FOR WINDOWS
New version enhances ease-of-use, adds 300 new features

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Oct. 3, 1994 -- Claris Corporation today announced
ClarisWorks 3.0, the all-in-one answer for business, home and education.
ClarisWorks 3.0 takes the lead as the best Windows integrated software
package with new ease-of-use enhancements, a robust new set of features,
superior award-winning integration and excellent performance.

Shipping in the U.S. Later this month, ClarisWorks 3.0 is designed
specifically for the needs of users in small business, home, and
educational settings.

The new version adds new Claris Assistance Technology that guides users
through the creation of professional-looking documents. ClarisWorks 3.0
also includes wholly new capabilities such as outlining, presentation,
color painting, and "Shortcuts" task-automation, as well as more than 300
new features that bolster its word processing, spreadsheet, database and
drawing environments.

In addition, ClarisWorks 3.0 is one of the first Windows 32-bit business
applications, enabling it to take advantage of the processing power of
Windows 95, the next version of the Windows operating system scheduled to
ship from Microsoft Corp. in 1995.

"ClarisWorks 1.0 won industry awards for bringing superior integration to
the Windows integrated category. ClarisWorks 3.0 sets yet a higher
standard for this market," said Daniel L. Eilers, Claris president and
CEO. "With its ease-of-use breakthroughs, feature breadth and depth and
compact, high-performance design, ClarisWorks 3.0 offers the best Windows
productivity software solution at work, home, school and on the road."

Claris Assistance Technology: a goal-centric solution

ClarisWorks 3.0 features a new technology that helps users get their work
done easily and achieve consistently professional results. Claris
Assistance Technology lets users focus on their goals rather than the
tools in the product with Assistants that guide users step by step through
complex tasks such as creating a table. ClarisWorks Assistants also
provide expert advice not offered by any other integrated product on
document layout, design and content. For example, the Newsletter Assistant
does not ask the user how many columns to include, but rather what type of
newsletter the user is trying to create. Based on the user's response, it
recommends how many columns would be appropriate. The Presentation
Assistant even supplies slide content based on the kind of presentation to
be delivered, be it a business proposal, lesson, or even book report.

ClarisWorks 3.0 will ship with seven Assistants that will help users create
newsletters, presentations, tables, envelopes, footnotes, name and address
databases, and calendars. In addition to uniquely providing content
advice, the Claris Assistance Technology is also extensible. Over time,
Claris and selected parties will be able to deliver additional Assistants
without waiting for a major revision to the product.

Added breadth with new capabilities

ClarisWorks 3.0 includes four new capabilities to address the day-to-day
demands of most computer users who produce a range of documents and need
to manage information. A new outlining capability gives users a choice of
six outline formats -- including Harvard, legal and numeric -- to easily
organize their thoughts. And since the outliner is integrated into the
word processing environment, it is simple to create entire documents in
outline format.

For students, educators, small business users or anyone who needs to
deliver dynamic presentations, ClarisWorks 3.0 also offers unique
presentation slide show capabilities. Users can quickly order and reorder
slides, apply background or border colors and include movies created with
Microsoft's Video for Windows.

Adding graphical impact to memos or newsletters is now easier than ever
with new color paint capabilities. With the 25 color painting tools and
effects, it is simple to create striking illustrative effects or edit
scanned images.

The new Shortcuts help users automate tasks through unique push-button
access to frequently-used commands. Users can perform 150 tasks from spell
checking to formatting spreadsheet cells by simply clicking an icon from
the floating, Shortcuts palette.

ClarisWorks 3.0 Shortcuts are context-sensitive and customizable. Like
ClarisWorks menus, Shortcuts change automatically as a user selects
objects on a page. In addition, users can specify which icons appear in
the Shortcuts palette and can create their own Shortcuts.

Complete Productivity Tool

ClarisWorks 3.0 also adds the depth of features users need to get their
jobs done with 300 enhancements throughout the product -- in word
processing, graphics, spreadsheet and database. Automatic text wrap around
graphics, 75 clip art images, 7 fonts, multiple and variable width
columns, gradients and new graphics tools enable users to create
professional-looking newsletters, brochures and flyers. Custom text
styles, expanded spell check selection and document statistics speed word
processing tasks.

Users now have 12 chart type options, including combination and pictogram,
to translate data into compelling charts. These chart formats are
completely customizable, giving users unparalleled control over the look
of their charts. Additional new spreadsheet capabilities include word wrap
in a cell and a lock title option.

New automatic database field entry and validation options eliminate
repetitive keystrokes and ensure database accuracy and consistency.
Support for more than 50 Avery label formats makes it simple to create
mailing labels.

And America Online software kit and SofNet's FaxWorks are bundled in the
product at no extra charge for those users who wish to access online
services or send and receive faxes from their computers.

Superior integration, compact design and high performance

Superior integration remains the cornerstone of ClarisWorks. The all-in-one
design has won awards for consistent menus, easy access to tools anywhere
in the program and the ability to easily combine words, graphs, tables,
images and even video on a single page.

"For its target audience, ClarisWorks offers the best style of integration.
It is simple and intuitive -- exactly what small business and home users
need," said Chris LeTocq, software research director for Computer
Intelligence InfoCorp.

ClarisWorks is also ideal for notebook and modestly-configured computers.
It is smaller -- requiring as little as 2.8 megabytes (MB) for a minimal
installation and under 10 MB for a complete installation -- and faster for
many tasks than other integrated or suite products. The RAM-based design
of ClarisWorks also reduces disk access, providing longer battery life for
mobile notebook users on the go.

Exclusive cross-platform compatibility

ClarisWorks 3.0 is the only integrated product with the same user interface
and file format across Windows and Macintosh platforms, so users with one
platform at the office and another at home or on a notebook can easily
access their data anywhere. Cross-platform compatibility is especially
important in educational institutions where mixed environments are common,
and for mobile workers. (ClarisWorks 3.0 for Macintosh will ship
simultaneously with the Windows version.) And for users who need to share
information with other programs, ClarisWorks 3.0 features file translators
for a range of applications including Microsoft Word and Excel,
WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3.
