New Hardware Reference Platform Based on PowerPC Microprocessor Aligned
With Apple, IBM, Motorola Strategic Direction

NEW YORK, New York--November 7, 1994--The three companies that developed
the new, open hardware reference platform based on the PowerPC
microprocessor today stated that the agreement reinforces and extends the
companies' strategic business initiatives. At a news conference here, top
executives from Apple Computer, Inc., IBM Corporation, and Motorola Inc.
hailed the far-reaching accord as a key step in each companies' plans to
bring more relevant solutions to their customers.

"The early success of our Power Macintosh systems is but a hint of the
market potential of systems that combine an easy to use, mainstream
personal computer operating system with the power of RISC technology,"
says Michael Spindler, president and chief executive officer of Apple
Computer. "We believe that an openly licensed Mac OS running on top of an
open, industry standard RISC hardware platform represents a broadside
against the reigning Wintel platform, and will play a key role in our
ongoing efforts to greatly increase the presence of Macintosh in all
markets. Simply put, we believe today's announcement is good news for
anyone who believes in innovation, competition, and responding to customer
needs."

"IBM has been very successful in helping build support for an open PowerPC
platform, having gained support from such important industry players as
Toshiba and Canon among many others," says Rick Thoman, IBM senior vice
president and group executive. "This new PowerPC reference platform builds
on that success and greatly strengthens the position of the PowerPC
microprocessor as the standard for next generation computing; The PowerPC
will provide end users who have been locked into a limited number of
hardware and software alternatives for years, a higher degree of choice."

"We believe that the Power PC common hardware reference platform is
designed to change the force of computing over the next decade. Certainly
for our hardware and software customers, it will become the optimum
vehicle for innovation," says Ed Staiano, executive vice president,
Motorola Inc. and president, General Systems Sector. "Recently, Motorola
expanded its position in the PowerPC industry with the announcement of its
PowerStack family of RISC personal computers and servers. These PowerStack
systems, along with today's announcement, underscore Motorola's commitment
to become a leading supplier of PowerPC chips, boards and systems for
customers at all levels."
