ENTERPRISE SOLUTIONS LIMITED / ALPRANGE COMMUNICATIONS DELIVERS APS
PROTOCOL SOURCE CODE

ALLOWS DIAL-UP X.400/X.500-BASED ELECTRONIC MESSAGING OVER PUBLIC AND
PRIVATE NETWORKS WORLDWIDE

Alprange, now part of ESL, completes development of Reference
Implementation for Asynchronous Protocol Specification and Delivers to APS
Alliance Members

(Alton, Hampshire; 21 October 1994)--As voted by the APS Alliance in
November of 1993, Alprange Communications, now Enterprise Solutions UK
Limited, was commissioned to develop the Reference Implementation for the
Asynchronous Protocol Specification (APS) protocol, based on the
specifications finalised by the Alliance in January of 1994.
Alprange/Enterprise Solutions UK has now completed the project and
received acceptance by the APS Alliance. The APS protocol source code
software is now being distributed to members of the APS Alliance.

According to APS Alliance Chairman Jean Mourain of SITA, the global air
transport industry network, "I am very pleased to release this
implementation to all members of the APS Alliance. The APS source code
developed by Alprange/Enterprise Solutions has gone through extensive
interoperability testing, involving MaxWare, Tandem and Marben, with
excellent results. A detailed acceptance was also conducted by Transpac.
This Reference Implementation will allow more than 30 member companies of
the Alliance to develop products or services based on the APS standard,
which supports all Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) applications, but is
specifically targeted for use with X.400 messaging and X.500 directory
services solutions."

The Asynchronous Protocol allows multimedia X.400 traffic such as
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), electronic mail, voice, images, fax,
and binary files, as well as X.500 directory services, to be transfered
quickly and reliably using the existing global dial-up telephone network.
Prior to the formation of the APS Alliance, no standard for X.400
communications over dial telephone lines existed. X.400 has typically
required a dedicated X.25 connection, and in some countries, such as the
U.S., users can incur high installation and usage fees for X.25 lines. The
new APS technology has the potential to dramatically increase the
acceptance and usage of X.400 as a system for transporting business
information to large numbers of users worldwide.

Company Information

Alprange was founded five years ago as an independent software house
specialising in communications technology and OSI software products. The
company has successfully integrated OSI and EDI products to provide
effective business solutions to corporate and government users and IT
manufacturers. Their substantial customer base includes clients such as
BACS, Telekurs, SWIFT, Universal Postal Union, Swiss Department of
Justice, German Parliament, and UK Meteorological Office. Alprange is a
Tandem Alliance Partner, and has installed RUA software at a number of
Tandem OSI/MHS sites in Europe.

In September of this year, Enterprise Solutions Limited (ESL), with
headquarters in Westlake Village, California, a provider of complete
X.400/X.500 messaging solutions, completed the acquisition of Alprange
Communications Limited. ESL began shipping X.400 messaging products in the
United States in December 1991, with first installations at major
government agencies and selected corporate sites. One of the company's
first customers in the U.S. was Wal*Mart Stores, where ESL established an
entire messaging capability for the Home Office as well as for the
movement of all information to and from more than 2,300 stores, all their
primary vendors, and Wal*Mart's international operations.
