Zenith Data Systems announces wireless remote interface for networked and
individual PCs

CruisePAD wireless remote interface is the first computing device that
allows users to take full advantage of their PCs and networks -- including
applications, data, processing power and storage -- wherever they choose
to work. With CruisePAD, users may access all DOS and Windows applications
running on their desktop or notebook computers, and all network services
on the LAN. Designed for users who access, input and communicate crucial
information "on the floor" away from their desks, CruisePAD is ideal for
locally mobile users in office environments and in industries such as
health care, retail and warehousing

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. -- October 17, 1994 -- Zenith Data Systems today
announced CruisePAD, a wireless remote interface for networked and
individual PCs. The premier device in a new category of products designed
for locally mobile workers, CruisePAD works in conjunction with Zenith
Data Systems' recently-introduced CruiseLAN wireless product line to
provide locally mobile users in office and institutional environments with
the computing power, applications and storage capacity of PCs and networks
wherever they need to compute in their workplace.

CruisePAD enables users to wirelessly control a desktop or notebook PC
while collaborating with a colleague in a conference room, walking with a
customer, standing with a patient or sitting with a project team. When
used with a PC equipped with a Zenith Data Systems CruiseLAN/ISA or
CruiseLAN/PCMCIA card, this new wireless device allows users to work with
all DOS and Windows applications running on a desktop or notebook host
computer, and with any network capabilities available to that host, within
a range of 500 feet in an office environment. With the ZDS
CruiseLAN/Access Point, users may extend the range they can roam while
connected to their host PC. Use of multiple networked CruiseLAN/Access
Points can extend the range of CruisePAD throughout a building or campus.

CruisePAD's 8.5-inch backlit screen displays the video output of the host
computer and supports user input via a configurable on-screen keyboard,
stylus/touch-activated integrated digitizer panel or optional external
keyboard. Weighing about 3.2 pounds and measuring approximately 10.6 by
9.8 inches, CruisePAD can be comfortably held with one hand and operated
with the other. It communicates via a wireless spread spectrum radio,
sending input commands to the host PC directly or via a networked access
point and receiving display updates back instantaneously.

Brings PC and Network Resources to Where Users Need to Work

The first computing device to truly meet the needs of the locally mobile
workforce, CruisePAD frees users from the wires and desks that until now
defined where users could compute.

"The concept of a stationary workspace is diametrically opposed to the kind
of flexibility and mobility espoused by today's leading companies and
management consultants," said Alan Soucy, vice president, ZDS Mobile
Systems Product Group. "CruisePAD lets users take advantage of their
installed computing power without being tied to a desk.

"The concept of 'work-centered computing' -- bringing computing power to
where people work, not just where they're wired -- is especially
applicable to the workgroup trend in today's businesses. Studies by BIS
Strategic Decisions show that 69 percent of worker mobility is local. This
means millions of workers spend most of their working time away from their
desks, but within a building or campus," Soucy continued. "The CruisePAD
wireless remote interface enables people to be productive wherever they
choose to work. CruisePAD eliminates the walls and wires, and facilitates
virtual workgroup collaboration."

Locally mobile computing is a logical extension of ZDS's emphasis on
connected computing. Built-in connectivity has been a key feature
throughout its desktop, server and notebook computer lines, enabling users
to easily connect with co-workers and with customers, in the office or out
in the field. Now, with the new mobile product line featuring advanced
wireless technology at an affordable price, ZDS is strongly positioned to
lead the mobile computing market.

Target Markets, Target Users

Zenith Data Systems anticipates CruisePAD will provide convenient computing
and connectivity capabilities for locally mobile workers in office
environments and in industries such as health care, retail and warehousing
in which users access, input and communicate crucial information "on the
floor" away from their desks.

"CruisePAD is ideal for 'infonauts' -- information-intensive, locally
mobile workers who rely on the kind of mission critical data a PC can
provide, but who can't be tied to a desk all day, such as project
managers, engineers, financial analysts and information systems
professionals. CruisePAD and CruiseLAN products extend the value of
existing investments in PCs, software, data, LANs and communications by
enabling people to access and use those resources throughout the
workplace," explained Soucy. "And since CruisePAD runs and works with the
DOS and Windows applications of the host PC, there is no need to develop
or learn new software, or manage data on two systems. Wireless remote
computing will re-evolutionize the workplace."

CruisePAD Specifications

CruisePAD features an Intelligent Display Coprocessor that provides a
remote interface to DOS and Windows applications running on a host PC. The
2.4 GHz spread spectrum radio integrated into CruisePAD uses frequency
hopping technology to provide a secure, high-speed connection.

CruisePAD's 8.5-inch black and white dual scan 640 x 480 LCD features
backlit readability. Battery pack choices offer up to four or eight hours
of operation under normal usage conditions (actual battery life may
vary).

The new wireless device weighs approximately 3.2 pounds alone or 3.4 pounds
with the extended-life battery pack. Input capabilities include an
integrated digitizer panel activated by touch or stylus, and keyboard
options of a configurable on-screen keyboard, external compact keyboard or
an external standard keyboard. A protective, wraparound bumper enhances
its durability.
