VESA Approves Display Channel Standard

A communications channel that relates to graphic displays has been approved
by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). The standard,
called the Display Data Channel (DDC), defines a channel over which the
monitor can automatically communicate its capabilities to the host system.
At the first level, the standard allows monitors to feature Plug and Play
(PnP) capabilities. By adhering to the PnP standard, vendors can maintain
compatibility with existing graphics-controller chips. When fully
implemented, the DDC will provide an interface that allows for automatic
configuration of the display controller. It also gives the sophisticated
graphics user the ability to change color and control the screen sizing of
the monitor directly from the host system. The standard consists of three
parts: the hardware interface, the information content, and the BIOS
interface. For more information, you can contact the VESA office at (408)
435-0333.
