U.S. DISPLAY CONSORTIUM AWARDS ROHM AND HAAS JOINT DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT

Rohm and Haas to develop improved colorants and color filter materials for
production of next-generation flat panel displays

SAN JOSE, Calif., September 28, 1994--The U.S. Display Consortium (USDC), a
government/industry partnership created to enhance U.S. flat panel display
manufacturing capability, today announced a $1.77 million development
program with Rohm and Haas Company of Philadelphia, Pa. The agreement will
fund a joint research and development effort to produce new colorants and
materials for color filters used in next-generation flat panel display
(FPD) manufacturing. The new materials will specifically address the
economics of color filter arrays, which have emerged as one of the most
costly aspects of FPD manufacturing.

Contributing to the high cost of current materials are complex
manufacturing processes and low process yields. Dr. Angelo Lamola,
director of corporate exploratory research for Rohm and Haas explained,
"Through the use of advanced colorant and photoresist technologies, Rohm
and Haas will achieve higher levels of color purity, while simplifying the
production process." As a result, manufacturers will improve process
yields and lower the cost of production, Lamola added.

According to Mary Tilton, project leader for the USDC and vice president of
technology at Standish Industries Inc (Lake Mills, Wis.), the strength of
Rohm and Haas as a materials supplier was a key factor in its selection by
the consortium. "Rohm and Haas has the resources and expertise necessary
to develop materials that will rapidly insert into existing process
lines," stated Tilton. "Specifically, the company's proposed
specifications will address lot-to-lot variation and process variability
problems, which current materials do not resolve."

The two-year development program also includes two subcontractors who will
work under the Rohm and Haas umbrella. Shipley Company (Marlborough,
Mass.), a subsidiary of Rohm and Haas, will develop photoresist technology
for the new materials. The Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP)
at Clarkson University (Potsdam, NY) will develop novel colorant
technology.

About USDC:

The U.S. Display Consortium is an industry-led, public/private partnership
providing a common platform, for flat panel display manufacturers and
developers, FPD users, and the supplier base. Headquartered in San Jose,
Calif., the consortium's manufacturing members include AT&T, Coloray
Display, Electro-Plasma, Kent Display Systems, Kopin, Motif, Norden
Systems, Optical Imaging Systems (OIS), Photonics Imaging, Planar Systems,
Plasmaco, SI Diamond, Silicon Video, Standish Industries, Three-Five
Systems, and Xerox PARC, as well as the federal government's Advanced
Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The USDC's mission is to develop the U.S.
infrastructure required to support a world-class U.S. based manufacturing
capability for high-definition displays. USDC now has over 130 companies
representing the three industries in the electronics field that have a
stake in the development of a domestic flat panel display capability.
