NETCENSUS MODULE FOR MICROSOFT'S SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT SERVER (SMS) IN BETA
TEST

Tally Systems' first implementation of DMI retrofitting technology

HANOVER, NH--October 28, 1994--Tally Systems announced today that it is
beta testing a NetCensus' module that is DMI-compliant and operates within
the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) environment. The NetCensus
SMS Advanced Software Recognition Module (ASRM) will be an add-in product
to SMS. NetCensus is an inventory package that automatically tracks
hardware and software components on networked and stand-alone
workstations--including PCs, Macs and servers.

Tally Systems' pioneering NetCensus Recognition Technology, and the Desktop
Management Task Force's (DMTF) Desktop Management Interface (DMI)
standard, are at the core of the NetCensus SMS Advanced Software
Recognition Module. The NetCensus ASRM is the first implementation of DMI
retrofitting technology by Tally Systems, and offers SMS users:

NetCensus' Extensive Software Recognition

Automatically recognize software by brand name, version number, embedded
serial number and foreign language edition (a must for asset management in
global companies). Includes a unique recognition algorithm that ensures
thorough identification of software. For example, brand names can be
identified even when the version number is unknown. The module contains
NetCensus' unparalleled recognition database that includes recognition for
software since 1989. This is critical when identifying old versions of
software planned for upgrades.

NetCensus' Product Recognition Updates

NetCensus' Product Recognition Updates (PRUs) are issued every 60 days,
updating the module with automatic recognition for new software versions
and products.

NetCensus' Data In SMS Format

The module outputs NetCensus inventory data into DMI standard MIF files.
These MIF files are automatically collected by the SMS agent and
incorporated into the SMS database.

NetCensus' Data Available for Asset Management Analysis

In the SMS environment, NetCensus inventory data is exportable to database
tools and report writers, providing data for deeper analysis. NetCensus'
classification feature allows general queries and blanket searches that
help organizations manage their desktop assets. Want to standardize on a
word processing package? Find out the most popular package your
organization uses by asking "What word processing packages are installed?"
NetCensus will detail the brand name and versions, allowing organizations
to best plan for migrations, upgrades and end-user training.

"Tally Systems' NetCensus Recognition Technology integration will provide a
valuable adjunct to Systems Management Server in enhancing manageability
for our joint customers," states Rich Barth, Product Manager for Systems
Management, Microsoft Corporation. "Tally Systems was one of our first
Systems Management Partners and we have been working aggressively together
to provide our customers with extended management functionality."

In addition to the NetCensus ASRM under development for SMS, Tally Systems
already supports the NT Server network operating system with CentaMeter,
its software license management and metering tool. CentaMeter allows NT
Server administrators to monitor license compliance and optimize software
usage for both networked and locally installed software.

NetCensus and CentaMeter offer organizations sophisticated asset management
solutions that are NOS-independent, operating in several environments.
Both NetCensus and CentaMeter are accepted by the Software Publishers
Association (SPA) for purposes of assessing software license compliance.

The NetCensus SMS Advanced Software Recognition Module technology will be
available for customers to license in 1995. NetCensus and CentaMeter are
currently available directly from Tally Systems at (800) 262-3877 or (603)
643-1300. Tally Systems will be demonstrating NetCensus and CentaMeter at
COMDEX/Fall '94, November 14-18, North Hall - Networking Pavilion, Booth
#L5101.
