SYBASE NOW BUNDLES OPEN CLIENT FREE WITH SQL SERVER 10

Sybase Facilitates Broad Implementation of Heterogeneous, Enterprise
Client/Server Solutions Through Unlimited Run-Time Copies of Open Client

EMERYVILLE, CA, October 3,1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that it is now offering unlimited
run-time versions of the SYBASE Open Client application programming
interface (API) in order to make it easier and more cost effective for
customers to deploy heterogeneous, enterprise client/server solutions.

Open Client software manages the communications between client applications
or tools and SQL Server software or any other data sources using Sybase's
Open Server API. Sybase customers are now freed from tracking the tens,
hundreds, or thousands of Open Client run-time copies distributed
throughout their organizations to deploy enterprise client/server
applications. Moreover, Sybase's platform partners and third-party
software developers can now cost-effectively provide broad distribution of
Open Client run-time versions to their customers.

For the first time, SQL Server 10 software will come bundled with versions
of the Open Client Developer Kit for the Windows, DOS, OS/2, and Macintosh
operating systems (OS), with unlimited run-time distribution rights. In
doing so, Sybase takes a lead in ending the common industry practice of
selling the basic client connectivity components of client/server software
separately. In addition, Sybase's Open Client Developer Kit, which exists
for any of the 40 platforms that Sybase supports, now provides the
unlimited right to make Open Client run-time copies and includes a range
of developer libraries and documentation.

"Businesses extending client/server computing across the enterprise have
faced a major obstacle - the need to track individual client products and
protocols for each particular platform for the tens to tens-of-thousands
of users running client applications," said Skip Glass, vice president of
product marketing for Sybase. "Sybase is setting the standard for
addressing this obstacle by providing unlimited run-time versions of Open
Client, the industry's most powerful API for open, heterogenous
client/server solutions, to end users, third-party developers, and
platform suppliers."

Added Glass, "Now with Open Client, businesses have the means to simplify
the implementation of client/server applications throughout their
organizations while gaining greater flexibility in using the platforms and
protocols that best meet their needs."

SQL Server 10 Bundled with Open Client

Every copy of SQL Server 10, including Enterprise SQL Server and WorkGroup
SQL Server bundle, is shipping with Open Client Developer Kits for
Windows, DOS, OS/2, and the Macintosh OS. With these offerings, Sybase now
provides customers one of the industry's few out-of-the-box client/server
solutions with both client and server components. Until now, customers had
to license Open Client software for every client system connected to a SQL
Server product. Bundling popular Open Client APIs with SQL Server 10 - at
no extra cost - offers corporate users enhanced price/performance while
simplifying their systems administration efforts.

Open Client Developer Kit

The kits bundled with SQL Server 10 can be purchased separately - as can
the Open Client Developer Kits for each of the nearly 40 other platforms
that Sybase supports. Available for $795, each Open Client Developer Kit
provides all essential developer's libraries (Client-Library, DB-Library
10) and network libraries (Net-Libraries) required to link client
applications with SQL Server platforms. Customers simply license one
developer kit for each client operating system supported, and then they
are free to make unlimited copies of the run-time software. For example,
by purchasing an Open Client Developer Kit for Windows, customers can
distribute run-time versions of Open Client for Windows on as many Windows
machines as they choose.

Additional features of the developer kit include documentation, sample
code, international localization modules, Sybase's Bulk Copy Program
utility, SQL Server definition copy utility, and client-specific support.

Sybase Partners to Bundle Open Client

Sybase has begun working aggressively to promote the widespread
availability of Open Client across its broad base of business partners -
including hardware platform/operating system suppliers, independent
software vendors (ISVs), and value-added resellers (VARs). Business
partners can now bundle Open Client runtime software with their products
without being required to pay royalties on the copies they distribute.
This marks the first time that ISVs will be allowed to bundle Open Client
run-time software. Platform partners and VARs have had the ability to
distribute Open Client run-time copies but previously were required to pay
royalties, now eliminated. The availability of Open Client from Sybase's
business partners ensures that customers have the software they need to
access SQL Server-based databases or data sources using the Open Server
API.

Sybase platform/operating system suppliers are among the first of Sybase's
strategic partners to take advantage of the ability to distribute Open
Client free of royalty charges. Already, SunSoft has begun shipping
run-time versions of Open Client on SunSoft's CDware disks for Solaris x86
and Solaris SPARC. AT&T Global Information Solutions has a contract with
Sybase to distribute Open Client, and it plans to begin shipping Open
Client versions for various client platforms with its System 3000 products
in Q4 1994. The Santa Cruz Operation intends to ship Open Client software
supporting a range of operating systems with its SCO Open Server and Open
Desktop run-time systems beginning in early 1995.

Pricing and Availability

SYBASE Enterprise SQL Server 10 for all Sybase-supported platforms and the
WorkGroup SQL Server bundle for Windows NT and NetWare are currently
shipping with Open Client Developer Kits for Macintosh, OS/2, Windows, and
DOS, at no extra cost. The WorkGroup SQL Server bundle for OS/2 will ship
in late October with the same set of Open Client Developer Kits included
at no extra cost. Enterprise SQL Server 10 pricing ranges from $1,995 to
$256,160, depending on the hardware configuration and number of users
supported. Pricing for the WorkGroup SQL Server bundle ranges from $995
for a single-user license to $19,995 for 100 users. Additional Open Client
Developer Kits for any of the 40 platforms that Sybase supports are
available now for $795.
