ALADDIN SHIPS MAJOR UPGRADE OF STUFFIT DELUXE

Watsonville, CA (October 21, 1994) -- Aladdin Systems today began shipping
StuffIt Deluxe 3.5, a major upgrade to the company's award-winning
flagship product. Major enhancements to StuffIt Deluxe 3.5 include
accelerated speed for Power Macintosh computers, tighter space-saving
compression, more "drag and drop" functionality for improved ease-of-use,
integrated PowerTalk capabilities, and better AppleScript support.

Accelerated Stuffing and Expansion

StuffIt Deluxe 3.5 is now accelerated for Power Macintosh. Stuffing and
UnStuffing now occurs approximately five times faster on a Power Macintosh
6100/60 than on a Macintosh IIci. In many cases, expansion of files which
were originally compressed on other platforms is also accelerated,
including those files compressed into ZIP, ARC, BinHex, and Compact Pro
formats. StuffIt compression works by compressing files (by an average of
60%) into a document called an archive. Archives assist in saving disk
space, speeding modem or network file transfers, and making backups
easier. StuffIt is the international standard and accepted method of file
compression and archiving on all major online services and bulletin board
systems.

Improved StuffIt SpaceSaver

A completely redesigned StuffIt SpaceSaver is also included with the
StuffIt Deluxe 3.5 package. SpaceSaver compression is "transparent"; once
a file is SpaceSaver-compressed, there's no need to change the way a user
works with that file. When the file is opened it is automatically expanded
and when the file is closed it can be automatically recompressed.
SpaceSaver-compressed document and application icons never change, and
SpaceSaver-compressed files are recognized by applications in "Open..."
dialogs. Files may be SpaceSaver-compressed on-command by applying a
user-defined label or keyword to files. A user may also choose to have
SpaceSaver work during Idle Time (when there is no keyboard or mouse
activity). In this case, SpaceSaver seeks files which have not been
modified for a user-defined period of time, and compresses those files
while the computer is idle. SpaceSaver thereby increases users' free disk
space over time. SpaceSaver's compression has been improved; users can now
save up to twice as much disk space than with the previous version.

True Finder Integration

StuffIt Deluxe 3.5 also marks the debut of True Finder Integration.
Compression and expansion are now easier to use than ever before by
providing more ways to Stuff and expand right from the desktop in the
Finder. True Finder Integration is implemented in three ways: Magic Menu,
"drag and drop" applications, and new drag and drop support between the
StuffIt Deluxe application and the desktop. Magic Menu, a Finder menu of
compression options, has appeared in previous versions of StuffIt Deluxe,
but its interface and functionality have been improved in version 3.5.
Now, a user can select a file that has been compressed into one of many
compression formats found online and expand it by simply choosing "Expand"
from Magic Menu. The compression formats Magic Menu can now expand
include: StuffIt (.sit), Compact Pro (.cpt), AppleLink (.pkg), ZIP (.zip),
ARC (.arc), gzip (.gz), Unix Compress (.Z), UUencode (.uu), BinHex (.hqx),
MacBinary (.bin), and SpaceSaver-compressed files. Besides expanding
compressed files, Magic Menu can also Stuff files, and join files
segmented with a StuffIt product. Users of QuickMail (CE Software) and
Microsoft Mail can send mail (or Stuff and send mail) right from Magic
Menu.

Improved drag and drop applications (or "drop boxes") are also included
with the new StuffIt Deluxe. These work by the user selecting a file or
folder and dragging it over the appropriate drop box until it is
highlighted, and releasing the mouse. Many users appreciate the one-step
ease-of-use that these drag and drop applications provide. StuffIt Deluxe
3.5 ships with DropStuff (which creates StuffIt archives and
self-extracting archives); StuffIt Expander (which provides the easiest
way of expanding compressed files found online); DropCompress (a new
application which SpaceSaver-compresses files); and DropConvert (which
converts online compression formats into StuffIt archives).

Perhaps the most notable implementation of True Finder Integration is
StuffIt's new drag and drop support. To UnStuff a file from a StuffIt
archive, the user simply drags a file from an open archive onto the
desktop (or a folder on the desktop). Conversely, a file can be Stuffed
into a StuffIt archive by dragging it from the desktop onto an open
archive window. This functionality works under System 7 Pro (7.1.1) and
higher with the help of the Macintosh Drag and Drop extension which ships
with the StuffIt Deluxe package.

PowerTalk and AppleScript Support

The StuffIt Deluxe application now has PowerTalk support as well. Users can
add mailers and digital signatures to archives right from the StuffIt
Deluxe application. In addition, StuffIt Deluxe features improved
AppleScript support. A suite of Apple events for StuffIt Deluxe allows all
aspects of the program to be automated using Apple's popular scripting
system. AppleScripts can be attached to the StuffIt Deluxe "Scripts" menu
for easy access. StuffIt Deluxe also comes with its own built-in scripting
language.

David Schargel, President of Aladdin Systems noted, "With the
implementation of leading-edge technologies such as drag and drop,
PowerTalk, and acceleration for Power Macintosh, StuffIt Deluxe remains
the leader in Macintosh compression software. A lot of credit for this
should really go to our customers, whose suggestions helped make StuffIt
Deluxe an even more complete compression solution."

Other Information

StuffIt Deluxe retains other capabilities found in previous versions,
including the ability to password protect archives, and to create
self-extracting segmented archives for fitting large files across multiple
floppy disks. The StuffIt Deluxe 3.5 package comes complete with two
comprehensive manuals which include tutorials to guide the user through
the entire product. StuffIt Deluxe 3.5 is commercial software distributed
domestically and internationally and is primarily sold through major mail
order houses and retail stores for a suggested retail of $129.95. Aladdin
is extending a special upgrade offer to registered users of older versions
of StuffIt Deluxe at the special upgrade price of $34.95 (offer good
directly through Aladdin until December 31, 1994).
